A funny Todd Christensen story

During my high school years I lived in Alpine and was in Todd's ward. Todd was our sunday school teacher and young men's basketball coach. So, yeah, I've got a lot great Todd stories.

We had a really good basketball team led by his son Toby, who was a couple of years younger than the rest of us, but a great athlete. Saying that Todd is a competitor is a huge understatement. He coached the hell out of us and was always riding the refs for bad calls or bad no calls. The guy was still in NFL shape and was an intimidating figure.

We were playing in the stake center and the walls and stage of the gym were packed with ward members supporting the team. One time after hounding a particular ref during one of our stake tournament games the ref had enough of Todd and said to him, "If you think you can do better why don't you ref the game!?" Todd said to the guy, "Okay, I I'd love to, give me your shirt!" Todd took his shirt off and told the ref to give him the black and white jersey and whistle. The ref was taken back by the offer and told him that he couldn't actually do that because Todd's son was on the team. So there Todd stood in the middle of the court with his shirt off (mesh garments on) and he turns to the stage where all of the ward members were and bounces his pecks while striking a bodybuilding pose. Classic Todd.

It was a bit over-the-top, but we all loved it.

Todd obviously has his critics, and he undoubtedly has his quirks, but we all loved the guy.

Classic. That is pretty good.

On the topic of Todd Christensen, did I miss something? The past few times I have seen him (on TV) he looks sick. He looks very thin and his face is kind of ashen. Hope he has just been dieting or something and not due to illness.

I have a hard time believing this story. Not the actual events themselves but his response to the ref. "Okay, I'd love to, give me your shirt!" just doesn't seem like him.

"Surely, I would venerate the fortuity to be the adjudicator of this merriment, bestow upon me your stygian and alabaster tunic!"

That sounds more like Todd to me.

He saved the big words for his sunday school lessons.

Wouldn't it be great to see TC interview Bill Walton. Bill Walton is every bit as gifted when it comes to using pointless large vocabulary words.

When I read the story above it doesn't make me think, "Awwe that's great Todd's sooo funny!"

It makes me think, "stop acting like a jack ass, its church ball, put your shirt on!"

Oh well, I guess you had to be there right.

I think you are on the right track. The story was not meant to portray Todd as the comedian type, it was more a glimpse into his over-the-top behavior. A great guy, but always doing something that made you cringe. Kind of like the time he sang a solo of "A poor wayfaring man of grief" (all verses) opera style in sacrament meeting.

When he was coaching your team, did he give you any advice about "husbanding" the clock?

I have ADHD and I do things occasionally that some people think is over the top and is me acting like an idiot and they can't imagine why I would do things like that, but the young people I mentor at work love it and they learn a lot from it. If a person doesn't know me hears about some of the things I do, they can't imagine I work for NASA at the Space Center and I am an integral part of a huge project, but the people I work with know me and love working with me. And if you are family or friend, I will fight to the death for you.

I see a little bit of that trait in Todd and Jimmy Mac.

I share a lot of traits with Glenn Beck.

No, but that is a sweet one.

He used the word "plethora" quite a bit, and I actually heard him say it just the other day on the MTN while giving game analysis. That word should only be used when quoting "The Three Amigos", otherwise it needs to be retired.
