The "ideal" independent schedule for BYU

This is the kind of independent schedule I think would be ideal for us to work towards –





Annual Games: These are our "core" games



1. Utah – continue the rivalry

2. Utah St – our “push over” game; always good for conference weekend

3. Hawaii – keep a recruiting base there; may require a 7th home game every other year

4. Notre Dame – switching back and forth would be a dream but worth doing 2 for 1

5. Air Force – the one Mountain West team we should still play annually

6. Navy – include other service academies

7. Army – would probably want to schedule Navy and Army away games on alternate years





Remaining Games: 1 for 1 is ideal but some “elite” schools worth doing 2 for 1; exposure and recruiting are key but not over-scheduling or under-scheduling and travel distance are also important factors



8. California teams – USC, California, Stanford, UCLA, etc.

9. Pacific North West – Washington, Washington St, Oregon St, Oregon, etc.

10.Texas – Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Baylor, SMU, Houston, UTEP, etc.

11.Florida/South – Florida St, Miami, South Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Clemson, West Virginia, etc.

12.Mid-West/North East – Ohio St, Penn St, Nebraska, Northwestern, Michigan, Cincinnati, Rutgers, etc.

You probably could have gotten away with "BCS Schools" for the remaining games. :)

We've been dealing with the PAC and all their crap and officiating for years. Let's focus on playing teams that are East of us, especially Big Ten and Big XII teams.

With Utah on schedule, that gets our PAC game out of the way. If we do add another, any team would do.



I would love to see BYU add an ACC team, like UNC, Clemson, or NC State and add a Big 10 team, like Purdue, Indiana, Northwestern or Michigan State.



That gives 4-6 tough games a year, and that is as many as any BCS team, so that is good enough.

Amen. If we want to avoid cheating refs, then the Pac 10 games cannot continue. I hope Holmoe sees this.

You can drop Stanford. I don't BYU has any interest in playing them after their treatment of our school in 2004.

We had a great couple of games with Georgia Tech a few years ago. It was one of only 2 home games they sold out that year (of course Georgia being the other). It was great seeing 15 thousand Coug fans in Atlanta going crazy for the cougs. I thought they were a good matchup because of the Atlanta LDS fan base and they are a respectable yet very beatable ACC team.

We should be demanding 2 for 1s from bottom feeders, playing everyone else straight up, and not giving 2 for 1 to anyone. ND already agreed to play us multiple years straight up. Texas gave us a 1 for 1 after we agreed to the 0 for 1 which equals 1 for 2. We should quit doing that. And neutral fields need to be neutral. And we need tight contracts so these teams don't do the home game but back out of the road game.

I like the opening game in Dallas last year. They just announced 2011 will be LSU-Oregon.

Here is my ideal schedule



Play one team from each of the auto qualifying conferences each year. Play one top ten team. The two instate games. One academy just because Bronco likes to play them. Notre Dame as often as they will play us. Fill in the open spots with cream cakes from WAC or MWC. No lower division teams! How cool would that be for excitement and exposure.

SEC

Big 12

Big 10

Big East

Pac 10

ACC

Utah

Utah St

Navy/Airforce/Army

Top 10 Team

Notre Dame

Rest of schedule WAC MWC Conf USA etc.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Mars, but I couldn't find a single school that meets both criteria :P

Does it seem to others that the majority of posters want to load up on a schedule that would be quite a bit more difficult that the last few years? If we want an SEC type schedule, my sense is 8-4 seasons are going to cool our heels. Maybe its this recruiting class has people thinking NC in two years and we therefore need a strong schedule to get us BCS points. Or is it the MWC bottom dwellers (that we sometimes come close to losing to) that we want to escape forever?

Get 2 or 3 BCS quality games, 3-4 mid-level teams and 3-4 cushy teams. Hows that different that what top SEC teams do?

The days of the dumbed down schedule are gone come 2013. I'm glad they are going away. I want to watch, travel to, and talk about playing new teams from new areas with great tradition and good records. BYU will need to elevate their game to keep their record anywhere near the same but I'm all for it. My favorite BYU memories involve rivalries and playing great teams. Give me more of both.

Is the presence of an FBS team and two bottom conf dwellers on a schedule considered "dumbed-down"?

C'mon. Some of you guys suffer from "little-man syndrome"--which is to suggest that somehow now that BYU is free at last, it can stand up with the real big boys and go toe-to-toe with big name schools each week. Not even SEC teams play week-in and week-out tough teams.

After a few 8-4 seasons and 7-5 seasons, methinks some of you will want a few patsies back.

Just because your playing someone from a aq qualifying conference doesn't mean they are a great team or that BYU will lose. This last weeks game is evidence of that. It does increase your exposure and excitement for the game.

If we had a #1 SOS schedule and we were 8-4, I would be okay with it. That would be a ranked team.

Yes, but most of the AQ teams we would win "hands down" won't play us, because they are already getting their butt's handed to them in conference play too. If you've ever seen "Million Dollar Baby" we are that chick. Nobody wants to fight us, so we have to pay more and more money, for easy wins. So why not play someone that wants to play us and we can pay them less, much like Texas does with Utah State every year.
