Did BYU Lose?

Sorry I have been out of touch. Reading about the ALL the problems Satuday from some of you arm-chair critics forced me to reassure myself that we actually won the game Saturday. Makes me think of the saying that a pessimist is one who feels bad when he feels good for fear he'll feel worse when he feels better...Come on guys! For the second year in a row we started the season beating a Heisman hyped up and coming team..and we did it with freshman and sophomores! We outcoached Mr. Wundercoach! We defended OUR HOUSE! We had no turnovers. There is always ways to improve..and plays or lost opportunities back...but it is a GREAT time to be a cougar fan. So get out from under the little black rain cloud my little poohs and see the light. A pessimist is someone who is never dissappointed...see the bright and risk some disappointment every so often

there's a difference between saying what you'd like to see/pointing out some of things the team needs to work on, and being a "pessimist." It's obvious after Saturday's game that certain things need improved/changed - even though we won. I'll bet USC, Florida, Yewtah, BSU, and Oklahoma fans all feel the same way.

What do you expect the front page to look like on CC? "BYU is 1-0." "BYU is undefeated." "BYU hasn't lost a game yet." "BYU on way to national championship" "List reasons BYU won." "List reasons BYU is better than UW." "BYU is the Best." You can't scream "pessimist!!!" every time someone posts a good idea for how they think the team could improve. Obviously it won't affect anything BYU actually does, but this is a discussion forum...

Our victory was nothing like any of those victories you mentioned above. Bronco called it a complete victory. Oklahoma and USC fans should rightly be worried about their teams, especially their defense. BYU executed its game plan very well, and should be proud.

It's a fine line between resting on your laurels and not getting to enjoy a victory for what it was. I really like how Bronco told the players to enjoy the W for the rest of the night Saturday, all day Sunday, but to then start focusing on Air Force "the second they wake up Monday morning." This is approximately the same course that Cougarcorner has taken, the W over UW was great but now it's time to make sure we get to celebrate again this Saturday.

The fun thing about being a FAN and not a PLAYER is that I can simply enjoy winning. I don't have to fix anything for next week. I can look ahead to future opponents without getting in trouble. I can do that because I'm a FAN and not a PLAYER.

You're right, and a lot of what's floating around here lately is pessimism, not "pointing out some of the things the team needs to work on."

Except Bronco broke that rule Saturday when he started talking AFA to the team immediately after the AFA win:


Last season after each win, Mendenhall refrained from talking about the following week's opponent with his players, opting instead to savor each victory over the weekend and not worry about the next foe until Monday.



But immediately after beating Washington in last Saturday's season-opener, Mendenhall talked to his team about preparing for Air Force.

When the first thing someone posts after a win is how bad things went--dropped passes, missed assignments, bad play calling--then in my humble book, that makes you a pessimist. I wish more of us were not pessimists. After a win, we can celebrate it, point out the positives ,and after we bask in the glow, move on to where we go from here. P.S. BYU is on the way to a national championship....

I'd rather be able to point out flaws and areas of improvement following a win then finding reasons and excuses why we lost.

I believe that if you don't get too high on the wins then you won't hit the lows when we lose. Stay grounded. We won, great. Now get ready for the next road kill.

I heard Hans say that preparing for AF is always the hardest week of the season. There are added elements fmor cut blocks, to scheme, etc that require as much mental prep as possible.

Reading a post like the first one in this thread makes me wonder what message board I've been reading all weekend. "Rainclouds"? "Pessimists"? What the hell are you talking about?



Give me some links, 'cause I think this thread is B.S. Anyone claiming CC has been a den of negativity after the big BYU win over Washington must be horribly sad people, because they're seeing things that simply aren't there...
