LaVell Edwards, McMahon’s head coach, echoed Young’s feelings.



“I’m sure he was really moved,” Edwards said. “I know I was. I figured that would be the case. We’ve been working for quite a while to get him to come back, and I think the timing’s right now.”

Speaking of his own future, McMahon addressed reports he is planning online coursework to complete the 10 credits he needs for his degree, the apparent final stepping stone to eligibility for the BYU Hall of Fame, a place where Edwards said he “belongs.”



“One of these days,” McMahon said when asked for a timetable. “It’s only taken me 30 years — I should have a couple of doctorates by now.”



Kidding aside, McMahon said his four children are the primary motivation for earning his degree.



“I promised my kids I’d do it before they graduated, and I’ve lost three bets so far, so I’ve got one more to go,” he said. “He’s a sophomore in college, so hopefully by the time he graduates, I will, too.”



Jim McMahon: family man, charity worker, (possible) BYU graduate and Hall of Famer? Who could have guessed that just a few short years ago?



Should everything fall into place, McMahon will stand as more than an All-American legend; he will stand as a testament that, with enough time and enough effort, a man can change.



Certainly a greater legacy than “The Super Bowl Shuffle.”

I think the ovation he received, and I had hoped he would get one, shows the class of the fans (or the ignorance ;) ) that makeup BYU supporters.
