BigCougsFanDuring fall camp -- Bronco turned all of the defense over to Jaime Hill, and didn't attend a single fall meeting. First year of his head coaching career where he didn't have a thing to do with the defense.
He coached the special teams, which did a very impressive job against Washington. Washington averaged their starting drives on their own 16 yard line.
Hats off to Riley Stephenson who did an extremely well job and was even named Special Teams Players of The Week by the Mountain West(http://www.themwc.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/090610aaa.html ).
Amazing job on punting AND his kickoffs blew me away. A couple went 5-7 yards deep in the the endzone. Major improvement from last season.
I didn't notice who all came in on punt/kick coverage or protection. I've noticed a couple linebackers and Ross Apo, but thought we got down the field quickly and tackled very well -- pinning them deep in their own territory.
Chambers even let a punt(maybe two) go over his head, and was the wiser by choosing not to return it. Which I believed Bronco had a lot to do with it, and most importantly... No turn overs.
Chambers averaged:
13 yards a punt, 2 for 26 yards
18 yards a kick return, 4 for 72 yards
A friend of mine at the game was kinda bummed he would run side to side a little too much. He wished Chambers would just run straight up. Anyone agree or disagree?
Field Goal unit:
Can definitely use some work. We need a kicker who can make it 30+ yards out. Payne is great under 30 yards, but struggles with anything over.
We missed our F.G. early in the game, and I noticed we either went for it, or just did a very short punt. Which benefitted us during this game, by getting us great field position or we were able to continue our drive(which we were 1-1 on fourth down).
If we can get all our opponents to start each of their drives on their own 16 yard line... Then we will have a great advantage of winning all our games.

Sophomore punter Riley Stephenson helped BYU control the field-position battle in the Cougars' 23-17 victory over Washington on Saturday night, making the Huskies start inside the 15-yard line on three of six punts and inside the 20 on three of five kickoffs. Stephenson averaged 44.3 yards on three of his punts and placed the Huskies at the 1, 12 and 14 yard lines on the other three punts. His longest punt of the day was 47 yards. Overall, he averaged 37.2 yards on six punts. While kicking off, the sophomore helped BYU limit Washington to an average of 6.7 return yards with Huskie drives starting at the 2, 7 and 16 yard lines. Stephenson's two other kickoffs resulted in touchbacks.
