MWC hatred of BYU explained...

Read this on a AFA forum (posted on 1 Sept):



"Local media talking about the end of the MWC. I hate BYU. There goes any access I (or anyone else in Utah) had to AF football."



It just hit me that the reason why so many bottom feeders (not calling AFA a bottom feeder, but they aren't BYU, Utah, or TCU either) are pissed at BYU for the independence move.



They all know that the Mtn is doomed and TV access to their football programs is going bye-bye.



Not sure why this didn't register before, but this has to be it.

I'm sure that's part of it. I think everyone knew that BYU WAS the MWC. I really hope the best for teams like AFA. (They might actually be the only ones I hope survive this whole ordeal.)

I've also seen posts that basically say that the writing was on the wall for BYU with both Utah and TCU winning BCS bowls and newcomer BSU also with BCS bowl wins. BYU may have been the MWC for all of us, but Utah and TCU are the teams of the decade in the MWC. That doesn't take away from BYU's impressive record over the past 5 years, but I'm guessing that BYU was finding it difficult to get what they wanted from the MWC not having that BCS bowl on the resume. The early game against AFA is probably evidence of the MWC pushing BYU around a bit in scheduling.



I may be in a unique position being a BYU grad and an Air Force officer and pilot but I find the sweet respect we give the AFA a bit maddening. The feeling is not mutual from AFA graduates, I assure you.

Ha, let them rage. As far as BCS bowls, it doesn't matter. BYU was the school that carried all the weight, viewers, advertisers, and made all the money. This is evidenced in the free market where BYU was worth MUCH more than the MWC was willing to pay. If the MWC knew what was good for them they should have figured out a way to keep BYU, even with no BCS games. If that meant offering a few concessions then you better get those to BYU. Now everyone knows that they are in a predicament and there is no way to get AQ. SDSU/Wyoming/New Mexico were drooling at the prospect of having BYU drag them into AQ status, and that dream just got destroyed, perhaps along with any way to watch their teams. Sure, it's going to piss some people off, but any team would have done the same thing if they had the clout BYU has.

It's that old "crabs in a bucket" analogy, except it turns out that BYU is a great lobster and told the crabs what they can do and climbed out of the bucket.



Besides, I hate having the crabs every weekend during the fall. :bug:

Utah had 3 conference championships and 2 good season (although the 04 Utah team had a very cupcake schedule and the 08 Utah team was beaten at home by TCU for 59 min. and only won because TCU's kicker missed two FGs). The Utes are a 3rd place team which has a good year every once in a while.



TCU has been in the conference 5 years, won 2 conference championships and one crappy season (07). TCU is legit, but the 06 win over the Frogs was a true a+$-kicking, which is why TCU has kept the BYU helmet on its tackling dummy.



BYU paved the way for everything. Remember how bad things were: BYU was 12-0 and could not get a sniff of a BCS bowl. If Utah had been 12-0 in 01 instead of 04 or 08, it would have been the same. BYU has been the brand name of the MWC and its primary TV draw.



So, BYU provided 95% of the value of the TV contract, which is why BYU's new revenue will be close to the total revenue. The remaining teams worry that they will never get more than $1.5mil per year, ever.....



BCS status is secondary for the anger --- it is the knowledge they will be stuck with bad TV deals for a long, long, long time.

I agree for the most part about TCU and Utah, but the fact is that they are the teams getting the national hype because of their BCS (albeit recent) success. If BYU has even one BCS bowl they drive the league as far as exposure goes, no doubt.



Now for value, clearly BYU has been getting significantly less than market value for their football product. In that sense this was a great move for the University. They won't pull as much, I don't imagine, as Utah will in the Pac-12 eventually. I will be interested to see how long the Mtn survives without BYU and Utah in the fold.

I'll tell you what bugs me: The BCS equals everything in college football lately. If you've been to a BCS game, it doesn't matter how terrible you are every other year, if you haven't, it doesn't matter what else you have done. The BCS is a totally screwed and flawed system to begin with, so using it as a measuring stick is like using a live snake as a level.

I wonder which BCS bowl game TCU won? The same on as Hawaii and Illinois?



The difference between TCU and Kansas: Kansas actually won the one time they played in a BCS bowl.
