Cougarfan87My only real dissatisfaction with this game were a couple of times we punted when we were within Washington's 40. I hate punting when I am at the opponents 40 or less and netting less than forty yards. The last time, we were at the 39 and it was fourth and 8. Heaps had just thrown two incompletions, which were two drops. His receivers were getting open. He was hitting them in the hands. Why didn't we just go for it? I know some will say that the ball was punted down to the one, but Washington promptly marched it up the field and kicked a field goal at the end of the half.
Sark played it too agressively going for it when field goals would have been more appropriate. We were only up by six when he went for it on fourth and two instead of kicking the field goal outside his 20 yard line (his kicker had already made a 53 yarder). He should have gone for the field goal there, especially since we had already stuffed them on short yardage situations and they were only down by six with the whole fourth quarter to play. At the end of the game when they drove down the field, Washington was again in field goal range, which would have tied the game and given us only a minute or so to try and score something. Unfortunately for them, since they passed on the field goal, touchdown was all they could do. Hence, I think passing on that field goal may have cost Washington the game. Granted, we would still have to play overtime.
In the end, our overconservativism on those two occasions got cancelled out by Sark's overagressiveness.
I know that is nitpicky, but I just had to mention it. Overall, I thought we were the better team. Both QB's looked good, and the defense looked great at times. Shutting out Washington in the second half was good (although Washinton could have easily scored six had it not been so overagressive). I was impressed that we had zero turnovers, and aside from some dropped passes, looked pretty sharp. Bronco knows how to get our guys playing good football.
