A word on Kwhitt

You know, some of you guys just seem to have it out for KWhitt. I think he's done a PHENOMENAL job at Utah, and had the job not been given to Bronco, I don't have any doubt he would have done a great job here. One of the reasons Bronco runs things here at BYU the way he does is because it happens to be BYU. Kwhitt doesn't coach at BYU and so runs things a little differently than maybe he would were he our coach. I think it's obvious that Bronco wouldn't be running things the exact same we he is here if he were coaching at Utah or somewhere else. Kwhitt has been known to have LDS firesides with his players and he's at the U for crying out loud. I like him. I think he's a great example of an LDS coach at a non-LDS school and I wouldn't bat an eyelash if for some reason Bronco decided to hang it up early if we offered Kwhitt the job over here. He's played here, he knows what he'd be getting into, and I would welcome him warmly.

As for him getting in that guys face, I have no idea what he said to him and I don't think any of you do either. If there's one thing I think I know about that guy by now though it is that he is GREAT at motivation. Kwhitt has ALWAYS been able to get his team up for games. I almost wonder if they don't all chug caffeine and ephedrine by the gallon before they play us. But I think overall the Utes as a team usually have their heads on right and they would follow Kwhitt into battle any day. Plus I'm hard-pressed to believe that Kwhitt, after giving that kid the public tongue lashing you of course can expect from a football coach at ANY level, that he would do all in his power to build the kid back up later. Kwhitt has a lot of faith in people in case anybody has missed it. ("This guy can throw the football 100 yards! We have three wide receiver all-americans!!) It's almost funny at times how much blind faith he puts in people.

I know it's standard to hate on everything Ute here and I am generally in that club but to me Kwhitt is one of our own. He just HAPPENS to be the head coach of our biggest rivals. I would have the guy over for dinner any time. (But if Bronco came too, I'd definitely give him the bigger plate ;) ) Go cougs :)

I have zero problem with KWhitt. I just want to beat his team senseless 1x a year, and otherwise really don't care. I don't hate Utah, I respect them and enjoying beating them silly at anything.

I have to disagree. If bronco were coaching at the u or anywhere else, I would be shocked to see him call onside kick when up by 40, or call timeout as close to the snap as possible or get in his players faces or let slide discipline of players. Two different philosophies in two different guys. Football-wise kwhitt would be fine at byu, but culture-wise I have serious doubts that he would cultivate the right environment. Definitely would be closer to the crowton model than the bronco model.

I don't think Kwhitt fans call him Kwhitt just like Bronco fans don't call him Bronko.

And Utah is no longer our rival.

I was unaware that Kwhitt was derogatory. SIR KYLE OF WHITTINGHAM! ;)

And you're right, they aren't. And I love that. I've posted on here before stating why. I'd MUCH rather the Holy War be between BYU and Notre Dame anyway. They're too far away for it to ever get as ugly as it's been here the last ten years or so.

Agreed. Ours was more resembling the Crusades or the Inquisition than a Holy War.

Have to agree, although I don't know Sir Kyle of Whittingham, I am sure he is a stand up guy and I have no ill will towards him in the least bit. Do I wish he would not coach at my former rival school, ya maybe, but then again I ask myself if it came down to where I could make a living for my family and enjoy what I do, then I completely see why he when there.

You have to remember how things were for him and his family in the older days. I believe his dad was a coach at BYU and then got let go or got a better offer to coach at Utah. Sir Whittingham then got into coaching and had he opportunity to work with and under the direction of his dad at the U. Who can blame him for wanting to do that? What a cool opportunity.

While I will always be a true blue loyalist, I probably would have seen how the job at the U would be an opportunity that provided for my parents family and now my own young new family as well. No harm there.

I probably don't fall with the majority of the posters on this subject, but I am glad that Utah and BYU are now going to be in different conferences. I have no problem in cheering for both so long as it does not affect BYU's chances of success. Will I ever be a loyal U fan, no. But I don't see the need to degrade them or their program either.

Wow, sorry for the rant.

Kryle is a major league douchebag. All you need to do is look at his behavior before, during and after the Wyoming game a few years back.

Kwhitt is a great coach strategy wise, but is very douche-baggerish as has been mentioned. He plays the numbers, and does very well. I wouldn't mind the douche-baggery if it wasn't winning games for my most hated rival.

And for those of you pointing out that Utah isn't our main rival, you are being stupid and foolish. Our main recruiting base is here in Utah, so is theirs. Until that changes, we will always be rivals, no matter what conferences we may or may not be in. As long as we are fighting over the same guys, they are our rivals. Holmoe said as much, that this move wasn't about Utah, we were already planning it, but with the move by Utah, it made it a lot more apparent that we do something. Opened up more options, as he phrased it.

Kyle is a good coach, I mean his record proves that. But I don't judge a coach solely by his wins and losses. Rick Majarus was a good coach but he is a scumbag of a human being.

I don't like Whits attitude or his coaching style. Like I said it may be effective as far as wins and losses but I would take Bronco without the BCS wins over Kyle with the BCS wins any day of the week.

I think it's a little extreme to compare Whittingham and Majarus. It's one thing to rack up unnecessary points when you've already won the game, or have a kid unfortunately dress up as a pregnant cheerleader for Halloween. It's another thing when every other time you open your mouth it's a PR disaster.

If there are more egregious sins to be leveled at Kwitt that I'm not aware of, I guess I'm wrong. For the most part, though, if we've got problems with Kwitt I surmise we have problems with 90% of college coaches.

I agree with that statement. Just not ready to judge the guy based on an emotional game that all of us act in ways that are not our best hour as we get rapped up in the heat of the moment.

I wasn't comparing Whit to Majarus. I was just pointing out that, in my opinion, wins and losses are not the sole factor in who I want as a coach.

Whit is not a scumbag of a human being like Majarus is but like I said in the post you quoted I don't like Whits attitude(building a black tarp wall around his practice field to prevent "spying", kicking out of practice a member of the media because he used to play for BYU) or his coaching style (kicking an onside when up 40 points, last night stopping the game by throwing a tantrum in order to give the booth more time to review a play).

So maybe I do have problems with 90% of college coaches, so what? The coach of my team, Lavell and now Bronco, isn't a member of the 90%. The coach who was a member of that 90%, Crowten, was fired. I'm proud of that fact.

Fair enough, and I am glad Kwitt doesn't coach at BYU, too. But that really has a lot more to do with the fact that I want a BYU coach to be a very unique type of coach, who obviously has to care about a lot more than just winning. But as far as college coaches go, I still like Kwitt.

To illustrate: Bizarre ESPN scandals aside, I really liked Mike Leach as a coach. He would be an AWFUL fit at BYU. Glad he's not here.
