McMahon working on his byu degree?

Per numerous twitter feeds, Lavell Edwards told the media that Jimmy Mac has promised him that he will get his last 10 credits to get his degree.



That's big news as Lavell is probably one of the few people Jimmy Mac truly reveres.



Lavell said that after the degree, they'd get him in the Hall of Fame and "wherever else he should be."



Number retired? I think it's deserved.

Why would he? McMahon hates BYU. Have you read his book? He used BYU to get noticed by the NFL, but he hated the Mormon culture and has ripped the school repeatedly. Plus, he really is full of himself and a jerk. But he was a great great QB at BYU (and the NFL), so...

I only buy it this time because the source is Lavell. While Jimmy Mac may have hated BYU, he has nothing but 110% respect for Lavell. If he committed to Lavell that he would button down those 10 credits, he's going to get it done.

Mormons love to have people love them, even if they used to hate them. And we welcome with open arms anyone who thinks we're worthy of respect or attention. I think most of us on this board, and most BYU alumni, would loudly cheer any move toward reconciliation by Jimmy Mac, and approve entirely of his reinstatement into the official BYU QB pantheon.

Agreed. It's water under the bridge. McMahon is part of BYU Football history like it or not, so if he's willing to finish his degree and move toward reconciliation then I think we'd be bitter tools to turn him down.

Man I sure hope that works out, as I would be completely fine with him getting the number retired and put into the hall of fame. However, I do question one thing here. Unless Mac has completely redone his entire undergraduate degree, I doubt that he only has 10 credits left. The way I understand it is after a certain amount of time your credits will expire if you don't get your degree within a set period of time.



This happened to my mom with her nursing degree where she only had a bit to finish but took the family route and had us kids and when she finally got around to wanting to/be able to finish her degree, she had to start over again as her credits had expired.



Does anyone have any further insight into this? Is BYU going to give him an exception with the time requirement?



Tomorrow is going to be awesome!!!

Virgil Carter was nice. Giff Neilsen a decent 2nd. And Marc Wilson a solid 3rd. But Jimmy Mac was BYU football. He was the one that almost got Steve Young the Heisman. Without having such a great QB to follow, I do not see BYU or Young getting all that attention--even though it was 100% deserved. Great programs are great because they have tradition that builds upon tradition. Jimmy Mac is part of that for BYU.

The expiration only applies if you are gunning for a specific degree. Credits you acquired toward nursing in the 80s won't apply to get you a nursing degree in 2010--what you learned to get those credits is probably outdated info/practices.



The credits do not expire if you are trying to graduate in general studies. Your mom could've used those credits from years earlier for the general studies degree, but you can imagine how marketable that would be. In her position, it was wisdom to retake classes and get the nursing degree.



Jimmy Mac only needs 10 credits to graduate in general studies. If he wants to finish whatever program he started, the degree-specific credits have likely expired. I think in this situation, the general studies degree is the way to go.

O thanks for the clarification, that make sense. And in Mac's case, how marketable of a degree would he really need anyway unless he was not smart with the money he made in his pro days :skeptic:



I think it is really cool that he seems to be coming back ever bit slowly to his roots for football. You never know how a warm welcome from BYU could make a significant change in his life for the better.

Wow you should really do some research before you go around saying crap like that. Being from Chicago, i can tell you that stuff not true. Jim has the missonaries over to his house all the time. He takes armed forces men and women to the pro bowl every year. He is VERY and I mean VERY giving with his time to his fans. I would bet on saturday that he signs a Auto for every fan that asks. I for one have never heard him rip BYU. Yes, he rips provo but i have never heard him talk bad about BYU.

I would love to see this happen. I used to be of the opinion that BYU didn't owe him anything since he seemed to dislike BYU and Provo so much, but as I've become more acquainted with BYU history and the modern results of the things that Jimmy Mac did for BYU football I've come to the conclusion that he deserves our thanks and respect.



BYU independent study for general education isn't very difficult. Pay your fee get your B kind of deal for working adults. This is how young high schoolers that suck at school have been able to inflate their GPAs to get into schools like Ole Miss (reference the Blind Side). All he really needs to do is sign up for the classes, read the books, submit the token work and get the credits.



I hope that the University gives him the hall of fame on the very day he gets his diploma.

I should do reasearch? I met him in person, know someone that went to BYU with him, and read his book. When I went to a card show in Chicago in the 90's nobody was wanting his autugraph evev though he was only charging $15 for a picture and Montana and Jim Brown and others were charging $200. Evev the locals wanted nothing to do with him. He was nice enough to me, but said that he did not want his kids going to BYU.



He had no business being at BYU. He wouldn't last two weeks under Mendenhall. He admitted in his book to drinking all of the time and the reason he loves LE is because he knew about his drinking and turned a blind eye.



Read his book. He bashed BYU so many times I don't know why I kept reading except I guess it counts as good research. He said that the only good things he got out of BYU were meeting his wife and someone introducing him to golf. Beer, golf, and family is what he cares about.



Read his book. Don't tell me to do my research.
