If BYU can make it work, I think there will be a lot of teams who are currently doing more than their share for their conferences (USC, TX, OU, OSU, PSU, Neb) that will be tempted to see how they'd fare with an ESPN contract that they don't have to share.

My only question on the talk of teams like Texas and USC of going independent because they know they are the major breadwinners of their conferences is when is enough money enough? Both schools have enough donors to never need for any coach's salary or facilities that they could possibly want. BYU went independent not with money being on the top of the list, but it was because we were talking about getting about $1.5 million a year on TV revenue. As stated this week in the media, Notre Dame gets about $7-8 million total revenue from a home game. I'm sure it's the same for Texas and USC, plus the other money. Are they really not already paying for about any normal sports related costs for all of their sponsored sports programs? I guess enough is never enough.

I'm not bashful about claiming that I called the whole "ESPN Conference" that BYU would be joining weeks before it actually took place and when most folks were still leary about going independent. I'm here to tell you that BYU's move is the shot heard around college football. It won't happen overnight, but schools like USC (which is private and could make the move very easily) are looking at their own conference, the amount of money they bring to it and the fact that they just added two more mouths to feed and beginning to understand what being independence can mean to them. The conferences as structured now will be a thing of the past. Media (i.e. ESPN, Fox Sports, CBS Sports) conferences are the future - and we just got tied in to the BCS of media conferences.

Do you know anyone that wouldn't be interested in a 30-50% raise to do essentially what they do now? I don't.

Uh, that's 7 or 8m per year for their TV contract. If they were getting this much per game then their helmets would dent too easily because of the pure gold they would be made of. ;)

I think they will just tell everyone else in their conferences that they are going to go indy, and the rest will make concessions so they stay. (Just like we already saw for Texas)

BYU is the only one that can make indy work, but they are surrounded by ingrates.

If BYU is successful, both on the field and financially, one of the "big" teams will jump to independence in 3-5 years. Others will follow shortly there after.

BYU will again change college football in a major way.

BYU's move now has a lot of football businesses interested in whether they can be succesfull

I do not see the SEC disbanding. Ever. I also do not see the Big Ten going down. No Big least team could do it, no ACC team either, except perhaps Miami, and they abandoned Indy status 18 years ago. I suppose FSU could, but they wouldn't.

I do think Texas an OU would consider it, but only Texas could pull it off. Oklahoma has a name, but not enough bodies in state, or enough fans out of state. USC surely could, as could Stanford(resources--not fans), and perhaps Oregon and UCLA. The rest have no shot.

I really only see perhaps 3 or 4 teams trying it--USC, Texas, Miami and maybe 1 other. It will not be a trend.

If Texas can make a profit with their own network, I don't see any reason that they couldn't succeed as an independent in football.

I bet part of the reason ESPN was so on board with it is because they want a test case to start going after "bigger" schools.

I see the Pac-12 making a successful second attempt at snatching up Texas/OU once the Big 12 falls apart as being more likely than USC going indy any time soon. The USC has the Pac-12 by the balls, as well as ancient rivalry's/travel partners in UCLA, Cal, etc.The ties between these schools go much deeper than football. USC leaving the Pac-12? Not happening. It'd be fun to discuss during the off-season I guess, but this isn't the off-season anymore (thank goodness).

Notre Dame makes $15MM/year from TV.

What about home game ticket sales? Their average ticket price has to be way higher than BYU's, and we supposedly make about $3MM/home game.

I don't know. But 65,000 seats at $30 a ticket = About $2MM. Then add in all the $1000/$10,000 booster seats.

student all-sport pass football tickets read $10 each.

however, I know for a fact that those same tickets were being sold for $30-50 each in the after-market. Not that BYU sees any of that money.
