Glad we don't have KWhit

Watching the game tonight just reinforced how glad I am to have Bronco instead of KWhit as our coach. I tried to picture him on our sideline, running our team and it nearly made me gag. Nothing really major wrong with the guy, but I just don't like his style. Luckily for us we don't have to worry about this.

Can I just say that I hate the whole "freeze the kicker" thing right before the ball is snapped. I think it is totally classless. Just call the time out as the kicker is setting up and don't be a tool you douche bag.

I think that's at least the second time he's done that where he tried to "freeze the kicker" two times in a row just as the ball is snapped and when the second FG was missed (last was against BYU last year as I recall).

Again, it's fine to let the kicker stew about it a little while. I don't even care if you use all the timeouts in the attempt to do so. I just hate it when coaches try to do it milliseconds before the ball is hiked. If you can't do it before a at least a few seconds before the ball is snapped, you don't deserve it anyway.

And one other thing back to the original point, it's not that he would be a bad coach. Far from it. I really think he is a great defensive mind. But he is not a good fit for the BYU HC gig plain and simple. Bronco has been the perfect replacement for Lavell and it actually makes me thankful for the Crowton era since we would never have gotten him otherwise.

Can I just say that I hate the whole "onside kick when up by 40+" thing?

Seriously, the idea that we could have had DimWhitt as a coach instead of Bronco makes my stomach turn.

I thought the Utah defense looked pretty solid last night. And Asiata looked good, too.

I laughed and laughed when Whittingham called the second time out but the kicker had missed the FG.

Couldn't believe that the Pitt QB threw an INT in OT.

I'm glad you guys don't have Kyle too.

and I hate the freeze the kicker thing too. I don't understand the point of it. I've hated that since the first time i saw it but I don't know what can be done to stop it.

I wondered if any of the potential recruits for Utah thought twice about KW when Shakey Smithson comes off the field after the botched punt he fumbled making that two fumbles in the game. KW gets in his face and lets him know his displeasure. Did he really think that was all that Smithson needed right then that he was that stupid and deft not to understand that he had made a bad decision? The first fumble was just one of those things of luck as he was transferring the ball from one hand to the other as backs are taught to do to shield the ball and the Pitt defender just hit his arms at the exact right point causing the fumble.

So is that the kind of coach you really want that is going to chew your butt out on national TV? The game means more to him than you as a player? Most descent coaches won't do that because they understand there is no one on that field that understands he messed up more than the player at that moment and it just isn't the time to do it either. Smithson isn't a better player now because of the actions of KW and personally I'd think a whole lot less of a coach that did what he did to him in front of the nation.

Such a contrast between KW and Coach Medenhall.

As far as the "freeze the kicker" ploy...it's just been part of the game for awhile and I don't have that big of a heartache over it. I don't recall the refs allowing the play to proceed to the point it did twice where the football was actually kicked twice. I think that was a bit overboard, but where you get set and before you kick they let you think about it more, I don't have a problem with that. I didn't like having the FG kicked 3 times.

Kwit is a very very good coach. we would be lucky to have him, but his style does not fit byu like bronco's does. they are all about winning. nothing else. you do whatever it takes to win. they have a culture of cheat if you can get away with it and take cheap shots. It just wouldn't mesh as well at byu. byu has more class than that. no ute logos in our urinals, stuff like that.

I wouldn't mind have kwit as our coach. he is a winner. with the recruiting edge byu seems to have over utah he would be able to do very well. I am not sure however that he would have been able to land the recruits that bronco has. He probably would have taken the approach crowton took which really blew up in his face and made the university look bad. Bronco has taken his limited recruiting pool and expanded it in a genius way.

I love bronco and think he is perfect for byu. Wouldn't trade him for anybody. he is perfect for byu.

Given my pure hatred for kwit, I tuned in simply in hopes of seeing him lose. I love when he loses. I love that look on his face, but just because I hate him doesn't mean I can't admit he is a damn good coach. I think they are going to do very well in the pac10 unfortunately.

I think it's pretty standard to give a player an ear-full after a second special teams fumble. Sure, whether or not it's needed at that point is definitely debatable.

Say what you will about KWhitt, but after his first couple of years, he has really figured it out. Utah looks like they'll be very good once again this year. I keep waiting for them to stumble, but they just don't. Utah has become a perennial top 20 football program. Big-time programs are going to be looking to hire him pretty soon.

Well I'm sorry, but we'll have to agree to disagree. I've never in my life seen it as a motivation for someone who fumbled twice to need someone on the sidelines to scream at his face. It would be a pretty poor player that needed that type of motivation. I'm not saying I wouldn't be as ticked as KW was, but then I'm not stupid enough then to go over to him and discuss the issue at that point because I know all I would end up doing is venting, which really is all that is about. There will be a time and place.

I've been surprised this morning as I've mentioned this issue at the amount of people that think that giving a player an ear-full is really the most constructive thing you can do for a player. I'm just glad I, nor my children, have ever had one of those coaches.

Under Bronco we've seen players that have suddenly lost playing time because they couldn't handle the ball appropriately, and I have to imagine that's the effect of that has gone a lot longer way than ever yelling at the player after he already feels about 2 inches tall as he just made a spectacle of himself on national TV.

I agree this is football at the d1 college level, not tball. When you do something wrong the coaches are going to let you know about it.

I agree about Utah. I keep hoping for them to slip up as well but they just won't. they are VERY well coached. they are going to do well in the pac10 and they will jsut keep getting better as their recruits get better as long as kwit and his staff sticks around.

kwit already turned down the tennessee job. I don't see him leaving for many other jobs. he is a utah (state) guy and probably won't leave. he probably sees himself as a utah's version of lavell edwards. if he keeps it up he will be. i hope i am wrong. it would be great if it left for another team because utah could at that point slip into mediocrity again.

would he take the michigan job if the dude from stanford passes it up (assuming rodriguez blows it again this year)?

If he wouldn't leave for tennessee he probably would'nt leave for many other teams.

At this point, if you are playing at Utah, you shouldn't be surprised. Watch one game on TV and you know what kind of coach KWhitt is and what type of assistants he surrounds himself with. If you didn't want the coach in your face after two fumbles, you should've picked a different school.

I would choose Bronco's mutual respect method over KWhitt's alpha-male method any day of the week.

I think Quezada and unga would agreed with you when they made their decision as did many others.

I'm a fan of the fake kicker freeze. Kinda like we did with UCLA in the 2007 Vegas bowl. Everyone in the stadium was sure we were gonna call time out. But as the clock wound down, we didn't, and he had to put it up - and we blocked it. :)

See this is why you have to give Kwitter a little more credit, the game wasn't on national TV, it was on Versus, so he must have figured nobody was watching anyway!!

I don't mind the freeze the kicker thing when it is limited to 1 timeout. 2 timeouts in a row like that should not be allowed. I could be mistaken but I believe it is illegal to to take 2 timeouts in a row like that in the NFL. Don't quote me on it though.

The thing I couldn't stand about Whit was when Pitt was driving and their TE had a great catch going out of bounds. It was definitely a reviewable catch as the player was bobbling it. Pitt knew this so they ran up to snap the ball. Kwitt starts screaming about who knows what and runs out onto the field which forces the refs to stop the play. He didn't call timeout to stop the play he just threw a fit and caused play to stop long enough for a booth review to happen. If you want the booth to review it then call a timeout don't force the refs to stop play by throwing a tantrum on the field. That is cheap and dirty football in my opinion.

Between Whit putting up his black tarp around his practice field, throwing media out of practice because of who they used to play for, onside kicks when up by 40 and what happened last night I cannot stand Kyle Whittingham.

Bronco is ten times the man Whit is.

Except that it's been played OVER and OVER on Sportscenter, and every other highlight show. It will be all weekend too. Probably get some "exposure" on Game Day, too. So instead of seeing a complete game, where the :utard: actually made a pretty good showing, all the nation will see is KWhitt calling that second time out.

Bronco is perfect for BYU, that's all there is to it.

I don't mind the icing the kicker thing. After all I really think it helped us winnour game @ Virginia about 10 or so years ago. It's just part of the game.

Anyone else see Fui's little bro out there? It hurts me deep to see the vakapuna name on a red ute jersey!

I also have no problem with calling timeout to ice the kicker except when it is intentionally called late enough that the kicker has already kicked. It Becomes more than psychological at that point. The entire play is run, the kicker has used up leg strength, the blockers have been knocked around and the holder and kicker have potentially been knocked around a little. That is just a free beat down on the offense. The ref does not have to acknowledge the timeout call if it is that tight. Pitt tried to ice Utah in ot but did it well before everyone was set.

The look on KWhitt's face after Pitt missed their second FG and he was given the TO was priceless . . . Ultimate egg on the face look.

I agree the D looked pretty good, but did have a few breakdowns in the secondary. If they had played a better QB they may not have won that game. I think the Utah QB was marginal at best. His technique was poor and it looked more like Pitt's sorry D than the Utah QB's great throws. I was getting pretty tired of the accolades the announcers kept giving him. He should have had more INT's but the Pitt DB's were either out of position or just blind to what was going on in the play.

As for freezing at the last second, that happened when they changed the rule and allowed coaches to call TO's. I don't like the last millisecond calls but it is a "new" strategy.

I do agree with those that KWitt is a very good coach. His record is proof of that. But he was not a great fit for what BYU was looking for in a coach. His last mentor was Urban and I personally don't think that personality a great fit for a coach at BYU. I think a lot of the "questionable things he has done are a direct result from the tutelage of Urban.

I was not surprised by him getting into the face of the player. I don't think there was anything wrong with that. The fumbles are a lack of focus, concentration, or poor judgment. He let the guy know and that was it. He didn't "ride" the guy he just addressed a problem as soon as he could and that was that.
