Local Broadcast History

I have read that CBS and it's affiliates played a big role in not allowing the MWC to deal with BYU. While I am sitting wanting to puke because of the awful VS coverage of the Utah game, and feeling glad that we will only have to put up with this crap for one more year, I am trying to figure out why CBS has a problem with BYU (if they do).



Suddenly I remembered that KSL used to be a CBS affiliate. Do you remeber when channel 2 and channel 5 swapped networks? Does CBS have a grudge with Bonneville Broadcasting, the Church, and BYU?

I wouldn't say that CBS has any problems with bonneville, the church, or BYU. For CBS it was about money. The mtn is barely holding on, and if they lose the option to up to 6 games, along with the 6 already lost when Utah left, CBS loses more money. Sure, by saying no, CBS loses everything from BYU, but they were going to basically loser it anyway.



The reason that CBS and NBC trade affiliates in SLC was because CBS bought the parent company (at the time) that owned KUTV. That was the reason for the switch.

CBS could have given up the 6 games and lowered the value of the contract. That would have keep us there and had a chance to increase the value of the contract down the road. They were just stupid. If BYU stays, they add a 12 team with a championship game and probably a BCS bid every year.
