bpleweI've really liked the unorthodox (in the eyes of the world) mindset BYU has with regards to this move. BCS and $$$ are secondary concerns??? 8) However, I sometimes wonder what the end game is here--what are we hoping to gain in the end?
- Do we expect to have more US fans than we do now (beyond LDS & alumni)?
- Do we expect to have more friends (i.e., the BCS schools, fans, and commentators think we're pretty cool)?
- Do we expect to have more converts?
- Are our primary sights international, where the anti-BYU rhetoric doesn't exist, and we could become the face of american football (and basketball) in China and Brazil?
I have a feeling that in the U.S., this will have a similar effect as most other times the Church sticks its neck out into the public arena. It will yield more friends, but it will also energize the anti-mormons and anti-religious as well. I'm surprised there aren't already people picketing ESPN HQ.
All I can say is, we will need to perform admirably, on and off the field. Glad Tom and Bronco and Dave are running the show.
