ESPN Agreement Details

ESPN will receive first selection rights to all BYU home games and any neutral site matchup where BYU is the designated home team. Details include:



An annual minimum of three games on ESPN, ESPN on ABC or ESPN2, including telecasts on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

An annual minimum of one game on ESPNU.

ESPN3.com, ESPN Mobile TV and ESPN GamePlan will be able to simulcast any ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN on ABC telecast.

BYU content will also be available on ESPN Classic, ESPN.com and ESPN Mobile Properties.

Any games not selected by ESPN will be available on BYU Broadcasting.

Now as long as BYU doesn't go and hire Todd Christiansen as its BYU commentator, this is a win/win situation. Can't wait to see how they run their live games on BYU TV. It could be really cool or really gay, but anything is better than the mtn. and TC.

Basically, the ESPN deal is a guaranteed minimum of 4 games, but ESPN has first right on all home games. I assume the pay out will be based upon which network televises each game. Most for ABC/ESPN, a little less for ESPN2 and even less for ESPNU. The thing that helps is that BYU can rent the HD truck to ESPN for every home game and get another fee for that, saving ESPN $$$. Or perhaps that was built into the deal already to get Athletics more $$$. Be willing to bet BYU gets about $5-6M for 4 games minimum, with more possible when a Texas or Notre Dame comes to town to play, and when ESPN picks up games. So not all games will be on ESPN, like Notre Dame has with NBC, but they could be. If not, BYU-tv and the BYU Sports Network could produce the rest for more $$$. For all sports.



Bet BYU increase overall TV revenues by about 8-10x. That is huge.

And getting access to ABC as well. With the addition of Notre Dame to the schedule, it looks like BYU could be on ABC and NBC at least once a year. I can't remember the last time BYU was even a regional broadcast game on an over the air national station.

The one detail that no one has disclosed is how much money? So, how much money is BYU gonna get from their contract with ESPN? How much will they make broadcasting their own games? Those are the two details I want to know.

Maybe he will become a "homer" again if he was doing a game for BYU.

I'd be willing to bet BYU gets a minimum payment for 4 games each year, with possibility for more, depending on if ESPN picks up more than 4 games, and depending on which ESPN network the game is to show on. If ABC or ESPN, probably make more. If ESPN2, a bit less. If ESPNU, even less. BYU probably wanted all 6-7 games picked up guaranteed, but ESPN wanted flexibility in case BYU tanks it. Also depends on opponent. Texas and Notre Dame probably pay more, while a WAC game less. I'd be willing to bet the number is fluid each year, with a guaranteed minimum payment of like $4M fpr 4 games. But I bet it could be as high as $10-12M for 7 solid games with ah winning record.



And that is just for football, and ESPN games. BYU-tv and the Production arm of BYU athletics will make more on each non-ESPN game, whether football or hoops. So the upside here is really nice. Just gotta win now and make it really pay off.
