At least according to the Gonzaga AD:



"Gonzaga AD Mike Roth: BYU "has given us assurances and backed that" about not using WCC as stepping stone to another conference affiliation."



If we really did give that assurance, that is an interesting bit of news. Maybe BYU actually thinks this is a long-term solution. It will be interesting to see how long that feeling holds once the first BCS invite comes.

Just like they gave the WAC assurances? Those seemed to work out really well!!! Assurances are great until you realize the situation is not what you thought it was, then you'll be back-peddling just as fast as you jumped ship from the MWC to get out of the WCC.



Don't tell me that if the B12 came knocking that those assurances would mean anything.

I think it may very well be a stepping stone for football with the hope for a football-only big12 invite in a couple years, leaving other sports on the wcc.



That's the easiest way to get around the no-Sunday-play problem.

If BYU was thinking short term solution in anticipation of a later step up, the WAC would've made more sense. The only thing the WCC had to offer that was better than the WAC was consistency and stability past the next two years.

That's just PR speak. I promise you the WCC fell all over themselves to get BYU and that there is no major poison pill if BYU leaves for greener pastures. BYU had all the leverage there.

This is not a stepping stone until the Big 12 comes a calling and then... it is.

The WCC and ESPN are renegotiating their TV deal for hoops right now, and I am willing to bet the league teams get a ton more $$$, which BYU gets a share of as a full member. I think that is reason enough for WCC to be pleased, even if short term. BYU just made them all some coin. I think teh MWC teams are about to learn the hard way that BYU carried the checkbook.



I bet BYU makes near 8-10x more $$$ on TV deals as an Indy.
