Was the MWC "on the brink" of Becomming an AQ?

my opinion on this copied from one of my posts on a different thread:



I'm disappointed that all these sports journalists - you know, the people you'd think might have a clue what they're talking about - are ignorant of the facts enough to think the MWC was "on the brink" of being an AQ. It was a long stretch with Yewtah in the conference, and since they've left the numbers have been crunched numerous times in numerous places... AQ status was NOT happening. "But we've got TCU and BSU!!" is another stupid argument, because neither school brings in NEARLY enough in revenue/attendance/TV exposure to turn the BCS's head. The MWC was never on the "brink" of AQ-status, and it clearly isn't now.

Seriously though, if BYU starts getting all buddy buddy with a bunch of BCS schools for scheduling (home and homes) then it just goes to show that how happy the BCS conferences are BYU killed the MWC when they left and that they don't even have to think about sharing BCS money with the MWC now. They'd much rather share with one school then a whole conference that has a bunch of subpar schools sprinkled with really good ones..

:utard: and BYU leaving give the BCS the perfect excuse for denying the MWC AQ-status. "Oh, uh... well you see, we were GOING to give it to you guys... but then you lost two of your top programs. Seriously guys, we were this close. THIS... CLOSE!" Reality is, they were never close.

It was never going to happen short some sort of divine or legislative intervention. The third criteria dealing with conference ranking was never going to get close enough or into the range to be included. Just look at how the MWC would be ranked 6th after most of the OOC games and then would end up a distant 7th to the Big Least by the end of the season. It was rigged to always keep it that way. How can you lose ranking by playing conference games? Easy, the people in charge just weight the BS conferences heavier and there ya go nice steady separation by the BS conferences to the non BS conferences. It was never going to happen and they were going to make sure one way or another that it never came to pass. Utah was a big blow but now BYU has put the final nail in the coffin.

oh, I forgot to mention that with Utah leaving, we not only lost their victories, but also any loss to them by an MWC counts as a loss to a BCS school.

I think it was going to happen. I know that the MWC qualified in 2 of 3 categories, and that was pre-2010. Add the 2010 season, and I think the numbers would improve. The other factor that really helps is that the ACC and Big 10 both only make it in 2 of 3 categories, so they either get kicked out, or the MWC gets held to that same standard. I think that the MWC would have made it in 2 years, too much ground swell of support nationally to not make it, so I can see why TCU and BSU might be very upset today. The rest can stuff it, though.



Having said that, BYU is still in a better position now than they would be if the MWC go an auto bid. They stand to make more $$$, have a higher profile and control their home games more. If BYU wins, it takes care of itself.

seriously, I can't believe how many use that as an argument against BYU going independent. "Why would they leave when the MWC was about to get an automatic bid?" Give me a break! For there to be even the slightest sliver of hope for an auto-bid, Utah would've had to stay and Wyoming, New Mexico, SDSU etc would've had to stepped it up big time this year and next.

And our "high profile" teams like TCU would have had to prove they can draw more than 30,000 out to games against the likes of Oregon State (and yes, that number would include OSU fans).



I think all of this "MWC was on the brink of AQ status" is just a ploy by the media/BCS to have an excuse for staying the way they are. The more they say "The MWC was SO close!!!" the more people will believe that the BCS was actually going to the MWC a bone. Obviously, there's now no way of ever knowing.

I've posted on several threads that anything short of legislation wouldn't work. The only prayer they have is AG's suing for monopolies and getting anti-trust legislature. I don't think that we want our future in the hands of politicians, that are only trying to further their careers. Just sayin. And I trust the upper court systems right now to do whatever the hell they want, which is rarely in behalf of the people.
