Sigh... when this summer began, Utah was probably my 3rd-favorite NCAAFB team. Yeah, I hated going on Utah Campus in the week leading up to the BYU-Utah game, but I cheered for them strongly pretty much every other game of the year. Besides, when they were with us in the MWC, their plight was our own: one of the better non-AQs trying to find a seat at the big kid's table.
When Utah left the MWC, I was kinda bummed out simply because it torpedoed my newly-rekindled hopes that maybe, just maybe, the MWC could get that autobid (since BSU had been added). But I couldn't blame them; it was what most of us are after, and part of me was relieved that Utah and BYU maybe wouldn't have to define themselves against each other, with the fans categorizing themselves and each other in terms of culture war affiliation, religion, politics and all. Utah could work on being Utah in the Pac-10/12; BYU could work on being BYU and try to continue making a case for BCS conclusion.
What has pissed me off for the last 6 weeks, and really has escalated today, is that just can't be the case. As far as I'm concerned, the Utes could have just stopped paying attention to us as soon as they got what they wanted and it didn't involve us coming with them. Yet all my Utah fan friends, my Utah professors, etc. keep trashing BYU in a way that extends WAY beyond traditional razzing. I can't believe how many of them believe that BYU's interest in going indy are solely attributable to "Ute envy." I mean, Utah leaving the MWC has something to do with it, but I could care less what Utah does from here on out. We have our own goals, and it's (surprise!) not like everything we do revolves around them.
It's like your buddy (BYU) used to date this girl (Utah), and things didn't go well and they break up. For some reason the girl gets all bitter and sardonic. She's generally alright to be around, but you can't hang out with the two of them at the same time because the girl starts acting crazy and vicious.
Then the girl starts dating a guy (Pac-10) who's way, way hotter than your buddy, and really a better fit: he's got some discrete tattoos, drives a hybrid, listens to NPR and Sonic Youth, all that. They get engaged and she seems happier than ever.
Then your buddy goes on a first date with a girl (Independent), who's all mysterious and may be a total dead end, but could also be a lot of fun and is at least better than that neurotic money-leaching creep (MWC) he was dating earlier.
And during the first date, the girl comes over, and pukes all over your buddy's table.
That's about as far as I can stretch this metaphor.
