Back to the offensive line for a minute. Although Riley Nelson is starting the game, the tackles are listed in the positions they would play if Jake Heaps were in the game. Is this a slight indicator that Heaps will in the end get the majority of the snaps, or merely a "default" to the players' natural designations? It's interesting, either way, with BYU's potential All-American tackle shifting sides of the line depending on which QB is in the game.

I think it probably has more to do with the fact that while I believe that Braden Brown will be very good for us, let's not forget that he is still brand new to the position. Switching may not be that difficult for a guy like Matt but Braden has enough on his plate just trying to get ready for the right side. Let's not confuse him by swapping back and forth. It's probably easy for even the coaches to forget that there are two guys involved in this decision, not just Matt. So while they may have said previously he'd guard the blind side of whichever QB started (and actually come to think of it, I don't recall any of the coaches actually publicly saying that, only Matt himself though I'm sure he didn't just make it up on his own), maybe now they just want Braden to be and remain as confidant as possible.

that and the fact that matt was just better at right tackle as well as the fact that it just adds one more problem to deal with when they are constantly switching positions. better to just keep them where they are. this two qb thing needs to be over already.



bronco said today that if he has to go all season like that he is prepared to do that. i doubt that will happen, but i hate to even think about that. I am just not as optimistic as some that this is the best decision. I will defer to the coaches though.

Yeah, people are making far too much of the "2 QB system" announcement. Will they use two? Yes. Is it an extension of fall camp to see who is going to be able to lead this team? Most definitely. But will it be a 50/50 split of the reps? That's doubtful. I'm guessing it will eventually be a 70+/30- split in favor of one of them. And I'm guessing that while there might be the occasional "trickeration" play where QBs are swapped mid-drive or both are in on the same play or whatever, for the most part they will each get full drives to see what they can do. So the offense should be getting prepared by the coaches for whichever QB will go in next every time the defense is out there.



Another point to make is that Coach Anae generally tends to script his whole game plan days before the game, and rarely abandons the plan. The offense should know exactly what to expect from Anae and the coaches about which QB will be the predominant factor in the game.



One last thing, I realize that a QB touches the ball on every play but aside from that, why is it that any other player can be expected to be swapped with little effect on the team but with the QB it can't work? Offenses change RBs, WRs, TEs and OL frequently if not all the time. What it really boils down to IMO is experience playing with another guy and confidence in their abilities. If a QB doesn't have confidence in a lineman to protect him or a RB to get yards or a receiver to catch the ball then the offense won't play in a "rhythm" just the same as if a different QB is in the game that the other guys don't have as much confidence. It goes both ways I think.

I think it is the idea of the QB getting in "rhythm" or into the "flow of the game". It seems to be the one position that is most affected by it. Others can come and go during the game but the QB seems to be more adversley affected when he misses substantial gametime. Maybe since he needs to do the most reading of the "D"? He has to read everyone on the defense not just the guy across from him or a couple of them. When he plays he gets "used" to what the defensive players are doing.
