Once we become independent what are we going to do with our 10 win seasons that don't get us into a bcs game?

i guess they will make up a great salt lake bowl to be held at rio tinto stadium?

I like a lot about independence but the bowl situation is gloom. given all the changes in the conference, does that allow the vegas bowl to renegotiate its contract to have the option of taking byu first before the wwc champs?

this is my number one concern with independence. i hope we were able to swing something that would be cool.

I'm sure there are a lot of bowls that would love to get a team like byu who travels well and has a national following. it would be an instant legitimizing factor for any non-bcs bowl. bowls are the least of my worries concerning independence.

We can play Dixie in the Top of The Mountain Bowl! Or I'm sure the Humanitarian Bowl would be more than happy to sign an exclusive contract with BYU...

I don't really care too much about a bowl. If ESPN can pay us $4-8 million during the season (that we don't have to share with the bottom teams in a division) then a bowl game is bonus money. Plus, only one bowl game means anything of real value, the title game. Everyone else is playing for 21st and 22nd place, or regional bragging rights, or a trophy. I'd rather have exposure and 8 million bucks! Both help me get into the Big XII whereas a Motor City Bowl victory doesn't so much.

If our main motivation is exposure, then bowling DOES matter. The bowl, whichever it is, is likely going to be on ESPN, and also will likely be the ONLY college football game on at that time. You don't get a much better shot at exposure for the program than a bowl. That's why Holmoe has been having talks with the BCS people about this if we go indy - bowls matter, and not just because of $$$.

Exactly.

also, I am not goign to be that excited about the humanitarian bowl or any other podunk bowl. Holiday bowl I like because at least its in San Diego where I would actually like to go. That is why I like the Vegas Bowl as well.

Dudes, if it isn't a BCS Bowl, does it REALLY matter that much? I say no. Let's not act like the LV Bowl or Poinsettia Bowl give us more than the Independence Bowl could or some bowl back East. Fact is, it is BCS or bust under the current model. The rest is nice, but not vital.

Including the BCs title game, there are 34 bowls, which means 68 teams play in a game. Many bowls have to look for teams to fill spots each year. Likely locations include the Independence Bowl, Texas Bowl, International Bowl, papajohns.com bowl, Eaglebank bowl, among others. If we win 8 games or more, we find a place to play. Not worried at all.

Yes, but these bowls have contracts in place. You can't just say, hey, i want to play in your crappy bowl, please forget about that contract you had with conference x and z.

Its not as easy as you make it sound.

It is actually, because many years, not all leagues can fill their bowl allotment because they do not have enough winning teams. The PAC-10 has had issues in the past, as has the SEC for #8 and #9 and Big 10 for #8 and #9. There are usually 4-5 bowls a year looking at a small pool of teams. Navy gets bowls each year, and Army could if they won enough. If BYU gets a BCS bid, they are set. if not, they will get an invite somewhere because they sell tickets, which is what bowls are all about.

One of the Big12 bowls. They will have 10 teams and 8 slots. Plus that moves us one step closer to their invite.

I completely agree with this. My bet is getting into a bowl is the least of their worries - I've been to the Las Vegas bowl many times and it sucks. Of course each bowl has tie-ins to conferences - but there are PLENTY of bowls to pick from and they would all love to have BYU. It isn't like the 70's and early 80's where there just wasn't many bowls to begin with. I'd bet that due to the changes in the MWC the Las Vegas bowl will put a clause in their contract with the MWC that allows them to take BYU instead of a MWC team under certain conditions. In fact, all the bowls that have any tie-in with the MWC or WAC will renegotiate with the conferences to allow them to bring in BYU. The idea that BYU won't be able to get into a bowl is borderline paranoia.

The only concern that BYU must consider is what the qualifications will be for us to get into a BCS bowl. At WORST it will be the same as Navy and Army. But I believe if we continue to beat good teams, and with ESPN as our big bro, the BCS will have to be a bit more accepting of letting BYU into a bowl.

Just win and everything will take care of itself.

Army and Navy have complicated rotating bowl contracts, where they replace one of the conference tie-ins in certain bowls every four years. Army rarely gets to a bowl, but that's why Navy is in the Poinsettia bowl so often; they alternate with Army and the PAC-10 for the slot vs. the MWC. It will be Navy again this year; if things don't go perfectly, that would be a great "welcome to independence" game to end the season.

Right, but they are leftovers that are even worse then the vegas bowls. the "good ones" are all snatched up by winning teams.

i dont' dispute that we will be able to get into a bowl, just that we won't be getting into a good one. it will be a step down from even the vegas bowl.

i agree and hope the vegas bowl renegotiates. for the crap it get, i still like its location.

I hate to burst your bubble but the LV bowl is one of the "even worse" bowls. The game is scheduled to be played on Dec 22 this year - just after the New Mexico Bowl, the St. Petersburg pres. by Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl, and the R L Carriers Bowl. The three games after the LV Bowl are the S.D. County Credit Union Bowl, the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl and the Little Caesars Bowl.

The LV bowl may be great for people traveling from Provo, but the game is viewed as a piece of crap bowl game. If fact, I wouldn't doubt it if the LV Bowl committee has already drawn up a resolution to allow BYU to play in the LV Bowl that sounds something like this:

"The LV Bowl reserves the rights to the MWC champion, unless BYU is ranked higher then 100th in the polls in which case we will choose BYU because the MWC now sucks, can't get their fans to travel, and would have no TV audience. But if we do invite an MWC team because BYU is in one of the other 20 bowls that are better then ours, we also reserve the right to cancel the game because we don't want to lose money."

The Las Vegas Bowl may be early and in a crappy stadium and have a low payout. However, a lot of people like Las Vegas as a destination. Also, can you tell me how many bowls (besides the 5 BCS bowls) had two top 20 participants?

I'll help: exactly two. The Las Vegas Bowl and the Champs Sports Bowl. In my mind, the quality of the bowl is determined mostly by the teams playing in it. We got a good opponent. We kicked the crap out of them. I loved every second of it. The position on the calendar and the money it paid out didn't have anything to do with whether I watched or not. It was one of the better matchups of the entire bowl season, excluding the BCS. And people watched it for that reason.

That said, normally the Las Vegas Bowl isn't going to get that good of an opponent. This is why BYU will want to secure contractual options to some decent bowls as part of the Indy move. And with the way we are rolling and with some of the awful teams these bowls are contractually obligated to pick, I think we can get some pretty decent stuff.

People keep forgetting that the move is with the help of ESPN. They will want the biggest bang for the buck so they will use their influence to "help" BYU with the regular season games and with getting into a "good" bowl game. They don't love BYU because of the squeaky clean image. They love BYU because BYU draws $$$$. Which team in the MWC sells out every home game during the season? Which team has the largest crowds when they travel? Which team has sold out numerous bowl games? So don't worry about them because BYU will have some very big help to try and create "nice" home matchups with BCS schools and ESPN conference schools while at the same time pushing BYU for away games at those same types of schools. After all how much $$ does ESPN stand to make on a game at LES if the matchup includes 0-5 NW Central Podunk College of Nursing? Probably not worth $2million.

The Top of the Mountain Bowl is between Snow College and a team they invite.

The move to independence will help us with better bowl contracts just like it helps us get more money and exposure during the regular season. There are plenty of bowl games that don't sell out that have a better payout than the crappy LV bowl.

The answer could be to simply arrange tie-ins similar to what Notre Dame has/had with the Gator Bowl and Sun Bowl. I believe the Gator Bowl and Sun Bowl can select Notre Dame, but has to select a Big East team every 2 out of 4 years.

The Las Vegas Bowl already takes BYU any chance that it can get, so I think this would be EASY for BYU to negotiate. I could also see BYU doing a deal with the Holiday Bowl. So, whenever BYU doesn't reach a BCS bowl, it could fall into the Las Vegas Bowl against the top MWC team (usually top-25) or the Holiday Bowl against either the PAC 12 #2/3 or the Big 12 #3 (either of which is generally top-25). I think those tie-ins could be negotiated fairly painlessly.
