ThrowbackBlueThis probably wont come as anything new to most of us, but speaking with my sources in the athletic department all indications are that BYU is going to announce they'll go independent in football and join the WAC for all other sports. Expect the announcement tomorrow (obviously that's not saying much considering it's the 31st).
The move, as we've all anticipated/speculated, is not only an escape from the MWC and the dreaded Mtn contract, but also a precursor to our move to the Big 12 within the next couple years.
We know the WAC intends to enforce Fresno and Nevada to pay now and stay through 2012 so we have playing partners for the next two years until the Big 12 invite is extended. There have also been numerous discussions with other programs to replace them in the near future.
On a side note..... Nevada and Fresno may not be all in with the MWC. Given the 5 million dollar penalty for leaving and knowing here was no penalty to go back to the WAC, they may have only been protecting their future in the event that the deal with BYU did not come to fruition. (my source didn't say these discussions have taken place necessarily, rather, he mentioned it as one of the possible scenarios that may play into the situation.)
One thing was very apparent in the offices I was in-- BYU is NOT happy with the MWC and Craig Thompson.
Like I said, none of this is major news or anything, more of a confirmation of speculations we've all had (I'm putting about 90% confidence in it). Of course, these things seemingly change by the minute so who knows what has transpired since this afternoon. Either way I left feeling our athletic department is putting BYU in a better position moving forward.
