Starting TEs look pretty clear to me

TE Richard Wilson 7 receptions, 115 receiving yards, 4 receiving TDs, 1 dropped pass

TE Marcus Mathews 8 receptions, 134 receiving yards, 2 receiving TDs, 1 dropped pass

TE Mike Muehlmann 5 receptions, 6 receiving yards, 1 receiving TD, 2 dropped passes

TE Austin Holt 2 receptions, 52 receiving yards, 2 dropped passes

TE Devin Mahina 3 receptions, 50+ receiving yards, 2 dropped passes

TE Matt Edwards 1 reception, 16 receiving yards

TOTALS: 26 receptions, 373 receiving yards, 7 receiving TDs, 8 dropped passes

Simply put, this offensive group has suffered from DROPitis all fall. The two guys with the most catches and the least drops are looking pretty good to me right now though...

As a group, the TEs are getting about 1/3 as many receptions, yards, and TDs as the WRs. That seems about right, though it's a big, big difference from last season (where we were strong on 3rd down, but bogged up against fast, athletic LBs).

Sampson missed all fall camp with a hamstring injury. He is blueshirting this year.

Edwards is a walk-on. He shouldn't play much, if at all.

Holt has a ton of potential, but had the quietest camp, and he still has a blueshirt year left. He should take it.

Mahina (who looked pretty good in spring) is limited by a sprained left ankle now, and still needs to work on his route-running and hands.

Mehlmann, a hard-worker and good leader, has a separated shoulder, and isn't fast enough or athletic enough to be a long ball threat.

That leaves...

1- Richard Wilson: Our shortest TE is also our fastest, which is helping him get open more than any other TE. After sitting out the spring with an injury, he has especially proven himself as an endzone threat. Best hands too.

2- Marcus Mathews: The converted WR is faster than most TEs, but taller than most WRs. He also has great hands, runs good routes, and leads all TEs in yardage this fall camp after sitting out the spring on crutches.

These two guys combined for 6 of our 7 TDs from the seven Tight Ends, over half the catches, and more than 2/3 of the yards...

I agree with this. The only issue is that these guys are also not the best blockers out of the bunch. the best combo guy is Mahina, but he has been less than awesome. But I expect Wilson and Matthews to get the passing downs and Mahina the running ones because he is a pass catch threat too.

Good stuff. Is Richard Wilson the next Johnny Harline? great hands, great routes, enough speed, and a little on the short side? But a knack for making plays!

I expect at the very least Mathews and Holt to be redshirted. They had some nice moments through camp but a.) both still have redshirts and b.) are either still shaking off the mission rust or just learning the position.

Meuhlmann is the only one who will most assuredly play though I'm guessing that at this point Wilson may join him. Mahina is the real wildcard. He has shown some flashes of brilliance but also has had his share of drops. But he could be a real athlete for us at Y.

I was sad not to see Sampson this year. I played with two of his brothers in high school and they really are a great family. It's a shame that BYU didn't offer Colt back in the day, he ended up north :(

Blocking? That's the reason Zed Mendenhall was born! :D

gmj81, Mathews has already used his blueshirt year. And as for Holt, though I think Bronco should sit him this year, it sure sounds like he's gonna play against Washington.

Meuhlmann still needs to recover from his shoulder separation completely, like Mahina with his sprained left ankle.

All of the 5 main guys have had drops. Too bad there.

BYU has 5 TEs fighting for playing time.

The 3 guys listed as "co-starters" on BYU's depth chart are Muehlmann/Wilson/Mahina.

Bronco said "3-4" TEs will play against Washington.

I'm hoping this means that:

A- With Muehlmann/Mahina slowed by injury, Wilson will be the main starter.

B- Mathews should get in to show his ability.

C- Holt is blueshirted after all. If 4 of the 5 guys are to be played against Washington, he should be the one that isn't. Don't burn his entire year yet.
