Texas to Go Independent?

Interesting article. BYU just may end up revolutionizing college football...... again. If it works for byu texas and notre dame, who else will follow?

And BYU recently announced that it would become an independent as well.

They did? That's news to my ears. This guy doesn't know squat, I think he's mingling A LOT of fiction with a little bit of fact.

Well when the deal was being made we pretty much 'were' going independent and I think that we still are. That doesn't make his points any less valid. Texas is surely looking at it and if they are that would be a big deal that would lead to some major changes in college football.

Maybe so. But I think that a lot of people are just thowing a lot of stuff out there, presenting it as fact, when really its just all speculation/ opinion. But then again, I thought the same thing when Chip Brown was posting his expansion news at first as well, so who knows. He may be dead on.

I could see that happening. BYU successfully going independent might make Texas wonder why it keeps sharing its revenue with all the bottom feeders of the Big XII. I remember seeing Colin Cowherd give some figures that showed that UT has to most profitable brand name of any College football team in the country based on merchandise sales and TV ratings. There might be unequal revenue in the Big XII, but I'm sure Texas could still make more on its own.



What would you guys think of a college football landscape where any school with enough power and national prominence (Ohio St, Florida, Alabama, Texas, USC etc.) were independent and the all the other school reshuffle into conferences?

Very interesting. I think that kind of system would lead to the quicker creation of a playoff system!



However, I think there would be enough of the population involved in the conferences that they would still be a major force. For instance, the Big Ten footprint covers 20-25% of the US population. If Ohio State broke off, you would still have 20% of the population interested in the Big Ten (Michigan, Penn St., Wisconsin, Nebraska, etc.)



15-20 years ago you had schools like Miami and Penn St. that were independent, but ultimately WANTED to find a home conference, as it eases scheduling, creates rivalries, capitalizes on common markets and group power to negotiate bowl affiliates, TV deals, etc. So, perhaps you would have the independent powers cycle back to wanting to be in a conference...

It would be good for teams like us but teams like tcu would be destroyed.

Well another post got lost. I have been thinking about this topic the last few days. I should have posted it to get the scoop. texas could get $30M from ESPN and if they got into the BCS they could keep the whole $20M. They could get close to $50M in one season. Would this move hurt their BCS chances? Could it open a door for BYU to join the Big 12-3? Would the conference blow up?



Lots of questions if this is real.

I would imagine that if Texas was independent they would receive the same treatment as Notre Dame. I believe Notre Dame only gets around $8 million from the BCS if they go because they don't have a conference to share the money with.

I wouldn't know how much ND gets from the BCS. It has been a long time since they have been in one!
