BYU staying in MWC as per...

Thanks for the article, but at this point I really doubt that anyone outside of the BYU BOT meeting really knows what is going on.

I agree. When I read it, I was was wondering how anyone could know what BYU's going to do before they meet today. Probably just someone trying report speculation as fact, and then claim they first broke the story, if it turns out to be true.

Well, the article was wrong on one count. The announcement did not come on Thursday. I would expect that if we don't hear on Monday, then there will be no announcement. They will simply go on as if nothing is going on. I hope they go independent, however, the ideal situation has ended.

The ideal situation is still the Big XII. Indy has always been a short term option in the ideal scenario.

After reading some interesting articles last night, I can't stop thinking about the WAC/MWC/BYU conference realignment.



Here is what we know



The MWC will now has to split their revenue 10-11 ways.

Currently most of the revenue for the MTN comes from the SLC market.

The MWC has said that they will help with the 5 million dollar exit fees fro Nevada and Fresno St.

Nevada's President agreed to the terms of the contract over the phone in front of the WAC legal counsel, so it is probably enforceable.

USU was the driving force behind the BYU to the WAC movement.

There is no penalty for leaving the MTN.



Here is what is rumored



The MTN contract becomes null and void if Utah and BYU leave and the MWC will have to negotiate a new contract.

The MWC will NOT qualify for an auto-bid to the BCS without BYU. They probably won't qualify with BYU.

If the WAC collapses, then there may not be a penalty for leaving the WAC.





So those who think the MWC commissioner played a brilliant hand destroying BYU's landing pad, the WAC, in order to save his conference may not have considered the consequences.



IF BYU stays, then the MWC will survive.



IF BYU goes independent, it puts the MWC in a very precarious position. They will need to renegotiate a television contract without their #1 market (SLC) that provides a majority of the revenue. Theynow also have to divide their contract amongst more teams and they have 10 million dollars to pay off for the WAC teams.



What if . . . . wait for it . . . BYU, TCU, BSU, FSU, Airforce, Nevada, Hawaii, USU, ?SDU? form their own conference. They could negotiate an ESPN TV contract and BYU could have the same TV deal as if they were independent. They probably could even get the LV bowl (it is the BYU bowl after all).

This conference meats every BCS requirement to receive an auto-birth if done before Sept. 1. It also effectively dissolves the WAC so that their may not be any exit fees.

There are no exit fees for NV and Fresno if BYU does not join the WAC by Sept. 1.

Even if that is true, what advantages would the MWC conference have over one created by the teams I mentioned. They would not have better revenue, TV contract, or BCS agreement. I am sure the bowl situation could be worked out pretty quickly as the MWC and WAC would essentially collapse. There may not be enough time to arrange something like this before Sept. 1, but this would be my preferred outcome.

I seriously doubt there will be a big 12 in 4 years. we will see. i imagine some big changes will happen by that time. being indy hopefully will better position us to be on the better side of those changes.

If the ESPN money is still available for BYU, they need to go independent. Not sure it's still available though.

I'm a bit puzzled by some of the implications here. If the Big 12 disappears (gets gobbled up by the Big 10, the SEC, etc). And if the MWC and the WAC disappear, (gets gobbled up by the Pac-10, or BIg 12, or...?) If all we do is end up with four huge conferences with 20 teams each; how does that help anybody. Those big conferences will sharing their money more ways as well, and if all the little guys get gobbled up (I don't believe they will), then everybody ends up in a BCS conference--and I don't believe those BCS conferences will tolerate that. This whole thing is pretty goofy if you ask me. Everybody wants to be in a conference, a good conference, that pays well, that plays well, that gets into good bowl games. Those conferences in jeopardy at the moment, will simply re-form, realign, or create a new conference--so what has really changed.



I will say this again. Considering all this craziness, BYU should get out of the crazy business, and just go independent; otherwise, they're going to be chasing their tail from now on just like all their other non-BCS guys.
