QB Battle Day 16

The day's final scrimmage was clearly one meant for the offense to both get a lot of work and success. The 1st Defense only played one series in the blue zone. They did give up a score to Riley, but it was a 33-yard TD pass. Sounds like the officials they brought in were told to whistle and flag any and all infractions no matter how minor. The only way an offense in the blue zone scores from the 33 is if they went backwards first.



It also looks like Jake regained his early camp form. I think this might be a result of the game slowing down for since for the first time in a long time he wasn't going against the 1st Defense the majority of his reps.



Day 16 Stats:

Heaps: 10-15-0-101, 2 TDs, 167.23 rating, 66.7% complete. 2 TD drives.

Nelson: 4-5-1-55, 0 TDs, 132.40 rating, 80% complete. 1 TD drive



Fall Camp Stats:

Heaps: 108-178-4-1140, 15 TDs, 137.79 rating, 60.7% complete. 18 TD drives, 2 FG drives

Nelson: 94-151-3-1045, 15 TDs, 149.19 rating, 62.3% complete, 19 TD drives, 6 FG drives.



I think we've all come to the conclusion that both QBs are going to play and that both QBs are going to play well. I think the pro-Nelsonites have accepted that Jake won't be RSing and that Riley will eventually give way to Jake. And I think the Heapers have come to acknowledge that Nelson can and will be successful in his ability to run the offense.



I'll keep updating the stats, but I think I'll change the title since I think the battle is over. While neither QB won the job outright, I think neither lost it either. I'm pretty excited to see what kind of production we have both on offense and from the QB position.

The interesting thing I get out of this is that for all of how people were worried that Nelson was a run first, pass second guy, he's thrown nearly as many passes as Heaps. They are two extraordinary athletes.

Glad to see the improvement. The Nelson we saw play behind Max Hall does not appear to be the one here in Fall camp.

Thanks Kitic, you nailed it squarely on the head. Both will play and both are good. Now if we can get all TE and Recievers catching both their balls.

I am confused - who got the TD Riley or Jake.

Jake had both TDs today. One to Apo, one to Brown. Riley had no TD passes today. So Kitic got it wrong there.

Sorry, Riley led the TD against the 1st Defense in the blue zone. Jake had the long TD pass of 33yards.

It was completed to a fellow Cougar, that ought to count for something. :lol:



Looks like we are well manned at QB this season. I expect Nelson to start against Washington becausee he's got experience, shown he can lead the team, and is an upper classman. Heaps won't start because.........it's against Washington, who felt jilted when Heaps announced he was going to BYU. Me thinks the Huskies have an axe to grind.

I also read he threw a 20 yard TD pass to Ross Apo. That makes two, right?

Fixed. My reading of yesterday's reports was all messed up.

Also, it looks like with Washington prep beginning today, updating these stats is going to be more difficult as practices (all or some?) will be closed to the media.
