BYU's Announcement Will Be...

You are allowed to change your vote. And I'd like to know what day this announcement will happen. Tomorrow, Thursday, Friday, etc...

The football program needs to get out of the MWC desperately because as long as the Cougs are playing 6 patises every year, they aren't going to get the respect nationally to be able to compete for a national title, especially when they struggle with good non-conference foes, TCU and Utah. Their SOS needs to start going up, but the problem with that is their wins will start declining.

I can't believe so many of you choose BYU will remain in the Mtn. West and get an independent TV deal... Talk about naive. For that to happen comcast and CBS would have to sign off on it. Why would they give up their biggest piece of the Mtn. West puzzle (BYU in football) for absolutely nothing? I mean it's common sense! Am I missing something?!? Don't even give me the answer, well they could still have BYU basketball games, no! There's not enough money there for it to mean a dag gone thing to them! It's like if you were standing there listening to a brand new iPod touch, and somebody walked up to you and said, Hey Can I have that? and you respond, "Well I don't know... I guess so!" and the person that now has your ipod says thanks! I'll leave you with the case cover. and somehow you'd be happy with that and just let that happen?

Comcast would give it up, to broadcast BYU's away games. Some BYU football would be better then no BYU football. This would allow them to keep most of the ads from companies in Utah as well. They should know they can't have the whole pie by now, so they should be happy to settle for a piece.

Sorry I just completely disagree, they have no real motive, as I pointed out and to be honest I feel they know that BYU is very close to being stuck between a rock and a hard place. That's why I hope for BYU to go independent in football alone and the rest of their sports to stay in the mtn. west.

I apologize, I reset the vote on accident!! Many apologies. But just so you know, "BYU in the MWC. Independent TV Contract" was winning with 73%.

I voted for what I hope will happen.

According to Jay Drew's blog, Option 3 isn't an option. That's why I picked the Independent TV Deal option.

* Not sure if this is from Thompson or Schwab, but the idea that BYU could go independent in football and keep its other sports in the MWC is not an option. MWC bylaws state that football is one of four "core" sports that league members must participate in.

I voted for the big 12 with ND although I doubt it happens right now but will likely happen a few months down the road after byu goes independent by sept. 1. I'm not sure where they will land their other sports in the meantime, but suspect it will be the WAC for the short term.

What's interesting about that, is that Texas has just set up a 3 game series with us (as we all know), and a 4 game series with ND.

Thats not what I picked.

Here is why I think that Notre Dame and BYU to the Big 12 is feasible, not likely, but feasible. This is why I included it into the poll.



What is the Big 12 looking for? They are looking for more money with their TV deal and a conference championship game. How is this possible? You invite 2 more teams and you have to split the money 2 more ways right? Yes.

Unless...those 2 teams don't take a piece of the pie.



What is Notre Dame looking for? Notre Dame could be coming to the realization that the landscape of college football is changing. They aren't the Notre Dame of old anymore. Joining a conference is looking nicer and nicer because scheduling and the complexities of independence are beginning to drag. But they also want to keep their TV contract with NBC.



What is BYU looking for? Exposure. BYU is a BCS type program in a mid-major conference.



Solution. Big 12 invites BYU and Notre Dame. Notre Dame gains a conference and keeps their Independent TV contract. BYU becomes a BCS team and creates an independent TV contract with ESPN/BYU Athletic Television. Big 12 gains a conference championship game and still only splits the TV pie 10 ways.



Big 12 and Texas also gain the help and insight of BYU in creating their own networks.

Everybody is happy!

Note: This plan all hinges on Notre Dame. Do I think it is likely? No.

But I do think it is the perfect solution to everything.

Actually I think we will start hearing a lot more rumblings about the byu-ND combo soon. I can't think of a better solution for us, ND and especially the Big 12. Is there a better (realistic) pair of teams to go to the big 12? I don't think there are. I also don't think there is time to pull a deal together in a week so it will likely happen only after BYU has declared independence. But in the end, yes, BYU and ND end up in the Big 12 ... Likely even for 2011. Follow the pile of $$$$ and where it will come from and this all seems to fit best.

Where did this talk of BYU and Notre Dame teaming up to join the Big XII???



Is this an idea that started amongst BYU fans OR is there talk about this in the media?



Notre Dame has made it clear they don't want to join any conference. I can't see that changing... Especially with talk of BYU looking into that option. That helps their cause for being Independent.

It won't happen as early as 2011... Colorado doesn't even leave until 2012.

It won't happen as early as 2011... Colorado doesn't even leave until 2012.

If a deal was made with byu and ND, the big 12 would find a way to get Colorado out early. As far as i can tell, Colorado is only sticking around the extra year because they can't pay the exit penalties that quickly. ND and BYU both bring the ability to provide their own TV revenue streams, making them attractive additions to the big 12 as partners who maintain much of their own TV rights and in return don't require big12 subsidies or cutting into current members' pieces of the pie. BYU additionally offers the ability to get the big12 network and TX Station up and running immediately at minimal expense. It is a win-win for all parties involved.
