QB Battle Day 15

More third down work and limited full-field team series. It sounds like there will be another short scrimmage tomorrow. I fully expect Nelson to be named the starter. And I fully expect that to be in the for Washington only sense too. Heaps will likely see 2-3 series against UW. So here are the stats:



Day 15 Stats:

Heaps: 3-5-1-19, 0 TDs, 51.92 rating, 60% complete, 2/5 on third down situations.

Nelson: 7-10-0-71, 1 TD, 162.64 rating, 70% complete, 3/5 on third down.



Fall Camp Stats:

Heaps: 98-163-4-1039, 13 TDs, 135.08 rating, 60.1% complete. 16 TD drives, 2 FG drives

Nelson: 90-146-2-990, 15 TDs, 149.77 rating, 61.6% complete. 18 TD drives, 6 FG drives



Jake was 1v1s in 3rd down situations and full field. Riley was 2v2s in 3rd down and full field (TD). Riley was 1v1 in full field that was 3&out. It's been a while since the 1st Defense gave up a touchdown. That's a good sign.



On a similar note, with the final scrimmage being tomorrow, should I continue with the daily QB Battle updates after tomorrow?

First, thanks for putting these together. Always a good read.



I'd be interested in more daily QB battle updates if there is enough to go off of moving forward.

I think tomorrow will be the last day to need to, because Bronco will name the starter for Thursday game day preps. And I expect him to announce Riley starts, but Heaps will play. Nothing too unexpected at this point at all.

just a note i think two of riley's three third down conversions were runs by quezada not passes. Not that it makes much of a difference. Getting a third down is getting a third down.



i am just not digging the two qb system. I want them to pick someone and go with them with the window still open of having them lose their job. I don't like the idea of basically running two different offenses depending on which qb comes in. i can see how this would work and the fact that they have been doing it all through fall practice should help as far as execution goes but I am not confident that it will turn out too well. I just still have nightmares from engeman and pendleton under crowton. that was the worst.

And it looks like Jake would have had a third 3rd down conversion if Holt hadn't dropped a ball.



I too have nightmares of Engemann and Pendleton, but I take solace in knowing that Heaps and Nelson won't be throwing to Wilkerson and the two Christensen's. We have so much more talent available to us. And I don't think Crowton ever spelled out exactly what each QB's role was. So both were still operating as if they were trying to win the starting job.



I think if Bronco plays two QBs, it'll will be within a set system where both the QBs and the team/offense know what is expected/required of them.

All I can say is that if Nelson DOES end up starting, I really hope Bronco plans on giving him more experience with the 1v1's. It seems - as has been pointed out numerous times by other posters - that Nelson is getting very little experience with the 1's on either side of the ball. Don't see how that could be a good thing, unless Bronco thinks our 2's are equal to Washginton's starters...

I'm still puzzled by those who think Bronco will insert Heaps into the game for a few series if Nelson is named the starter? If I recall, Crowton used to do that a lot and it killed momentum on offense. Granted, Jake is a talented QB, but it's going to take him some time to develop. The smartest thing to do (IMO) is allowing Riley to start for at least the first 3 games (without throwing Heaps in for a few series) and then after FSU, evaluate where he is at and determine whether or not Jake should be given the oppportunity to start. The Cougs can afford to play Jake against Nevada and Utah State, but not against Washington, AFA and then FSU.

They are going to start game preperation so the QB's will be prepared according to the rolls that they are going to have for the offensive schemes specifically for WA. So in other words the QB's will be running BYU's schemes against the scout team not against the 1st team defense.

I actually hope you go with two QB's, it will only weaken your offense (which is obviously good for the opponent that week). Doesn't make any sense to me to split time with QB's.

I am really worried, that no matter who starts against UW, we are going to have some serious troubles on offense. I think we'll be able to move the ball consistently, but early mistakes can be very costly. I really worry about seeing a fumble or pick 6 in one of BYU's first few drives, before the butterflies subside.

"I would not be surprised if Heaps ends up the starter, with Nelson used systematically, strategically and consistently, in what amounts to a "two QB system." (Wrubell). I agree with his assessment, and I don't see Heaps as the "passer" and Nelson as a spot "runner" as a 2 QB system. It wasn't really a two QB system at Florida when Leak was the QB and Tebow came in on some special situations. It certainly didn't hurt Florida, and I don't think it will hurt BYU--Heaps is the QB, but Nelson will make some contributions.



But Bronco and company are not fools, they know exactly what they are doing, and none of us should be so presumptuous as to think we know better than they. And my guess is, the QB spot will work itself out fairly quickly. If Heaps is named the starter and has a good game against UW (and a win), and he follows that up with a good game at Air Force (and a win), the battle is over--Heaps is the guy, and will be the guy at QB.

Ok, if your the coach and you have a back-up QB who does not have any game experience, how do you give that QB game experience? You put him in every game you can. Even the most settled of QB situations have the back-up put in to game situations as much as possible. It is just smart.

With all the expansion talk, I kinda fell behind with all this. You can unsticky my Fall Camp Stats thread, in fact.



I may go through and update it at some point, but believe it or not I'm actually working 72 hour weeks right now.

Mars you have done a great job with the fall camp stats too, I noticed that it had fallen off with all the expansion/independent talk, but working 72 hours? That's just wrong man. Are there that many fires?

Atta boy!!!!! Funny you should be working so many hrs. Me too lately. I'm bouncing between the 80 to 90 hrs. per week. Probably will stay that way till the end of Oct. It's all good though. All good.
