The BYU Front 7, Can They Stop Chris Polk?

What has changed in your front seven from last year?



I was thinking you lost a few key guys, or is that incorrect? I know Pendleton is supposed to be good, will he be healed and ready to go for opening day (he had surgery right?)?

BYU did, but they also return missionaries that don't get counted even though they started. I think the front 7 are very raw and underrated, sort of a good thing bad thing. I expect them to bring more pressure than previous ends were able too, but they may start slow.

I think it's more likely Jake Locker has 50 yards rushing... CP should get his 100+ I'm thinking.

We are basically replacing most of our front 7. fuga is back and pendleton are back. i think we will contain him just fine.



its our offense i am worried about. that is wierd to even say that.

That we'll score too fast and too often and Polk will get his neccessary 40 carries to get to 100 yards.



Seriously, we dont' fear your offensive line at all. I wouldn't worry about our front seven.

40 carries to get to 100? Okay, not sure where you got that impression, here are his stats from last year for each game, he never had more than 25 in one game yet still averaged 5 yards a carry for the season (behind a below avg O-line for that matter):

After another year with Ivan Lewis, our Oline is much improved, and experienced. A snippet from that original article I linked to:





Chris Polk can make a defense YAC.



That's "Yards After Contact," and opposing defenses yielded in 2009 an estimated 700 yards of it to Polk, the most successful freshman tailback in Washington history.

Polk finished with 1,113 yards rushing, which ranks seventh on the Huskies' all-time list, averaging 4.9 yards per carry despite running behind an offensive line that most would agree was slightly below average. That line figures to considerably improved in 2010. Seven players with starting experience are back, and another year of offseason workouts has turned a unit that looked decidedly soft in the middle in 2008 into a physically impressive crew.



"Everybody wants to point this out as a position of weakness for us," coach Steve Sarkisian said. "In my humble opinion, it should be a position of strength."

We shut down Oregon States Rogers (a better back than Polk), Oklahomas running game, Utah, Air Force, etc. etc. etc.

I have a feeling we can handle a sub .500 teams running game at our house.

Sounds just like the threads that mentioned J-Stew, and all the other pac-0 RB's that were supposed to run all over byu. Not too worried about runners.

I do mean it. Playing in a game that matters on the road usually results in a team having enough wins to go to a bowl game. No game that Washington played on the road last year mattered; and they haven't been to a bowl game in what 5 years?



Like I said, we've seen better running backs with much better o-lines; Polk is pedestrian.



The only thing that BYU has to do Sept 4 is not beat themselves.

Kind of funny how this guy uses YAC to mean "yards after contact" when I've only ever heard it to mean "yards after catch". If we are going to use his definition then we should be talking about Harvey unga, now that guy gained a lot of YAC.

The reason why everyone is reacting so nonchalant about the topic is that since Bronco took over, BYU hasn't had any problems stopping the run. BYU's defense, regardless of personel, doesn't give up a lot of yards to running backs. There have been games every here and there where we've slipped a little, but I'm guessing the defense is a lot more worried about Locker's legs than Polk's.

There is nothing pedestrian about Polk, and while our Oline is not great (at least not yet, it very well could be this year for all we know right now), it certainly will not be bad this year. It should at least be pretty decent, Polk will get his yards and Locker will tack on a few too.

There was nothing pedestrian about Jaquizz Rogers and Jonothan Stewart too, right?



Honestly, I can't think of the last time a Pac-10 running back did a thing against us. If Polk is the best thing you can roll out against us, I'm feeling pretty good about a big win in provo.

Polk will not have to do it alone, the combination of Polk, Locker, Kearse and the other receivers will be potent.



And our defense has looked good in camp, the staff is excited about the D and expect it to be pretty stout this year.

BYU will not lose the home opener and it wouldn't matter who came to town.

If Washington's offense is having trouble with Washington's defense, then Washington's offense is terrible.



Who here is scared of Polk? I never heard of the guy until you showed up.
