2-tier QB system at BYU

RE the Heaps/Nelson battle... I don't understand why many of you think that BYU can flourish in a 2 QB system? I've ready several threads now where many of you are convinced that the Cougs would be fine with both Riley and Jake getting equal snaps. BYU's offense is not geared or designed to thrive with 2 QB's sharing the snaps and there are only maybe a dozen or so schools that have offenses which can benefit from two, BYU not being among them. Offensive continuity and chemistry is built with one QB under center at BYU, not two. The biggest mistake the coaches can make going into the Washington game is starting Heaps and going with a 2-tier QB system. They need to start Riley and then after the FSU game, evaluate where he is at statistically and determine if Heaps should be given a shot.

For those who support the notion that BYU would be fine with both Riley & Jake getting equal time behind center, what is your logic/rationale for this?

I don't think they'll flourish. I don't think a 2qb system is ideal. I think its the best we have for now. Heaps needs reps but he's not ready to go now. But Nelson will prove two-dimensional without the mid range and deep ball and will get shut down. That's where Jake comes in to go downfield. But I'd also agree with your proposal for the most part.

The head coach and staff say so, having the most information and being in the best position to make the decision, and so far they have yet to be wrong in any significant way.

What's your rationale for thinking that a coaching staff with this much experience and success is going to suddenly make a bonehead decision?

I think we don't really know how the offense is "geared" this year. Why is it not possible that they have offensive plans for each QB? It's not like running the option is some new-fangled offensive scheme that they would be implementing for the first time in history.

I'm reminded of the 2002-2003 era where we had Engeman, Berry, and Beck, and neither really knew how to run an offense. Or perhaps Crowton's offense was too complex for their experience level.

I think we see Nelson and Heaps throughout the season.

I'm not saying I know more than the coaches, but when was the last time BYU used a combo. of 2 or more QB's and was successful?

Who cares when the last BYU used it. When was the last time Florida used it? Oh yeah--national title season. That logic is basically that it is rarely done, so it can't be done. But that is what the NFL thought about black QB's until the Skins won the Super Bowl with one. The issue is execution and getting it done. IF both guys can do that in different ways, all that matters.

That's like saying who cares when UNLV last won a conference championship, they're going to win it this year even though they've never won one.

Uh, BYU ain't Florida my friend.

Have you ever heard of 'offensive continuity'? Or how about 'offensive flow'?

You ignored my question. Your follow-up is irrelevant, because this coaching staff has never platooned QBs before. However, they have experience with platooning running backs and defensive lineman, and they have shown an ability to make the right decisions to put the team in a position to win games, even in extremely tough situations. Please explain why you think this ability has suddenly failed them now.

No I didn't.

The RB and DB positions aren't the field general.

I've already gone over this ad nauseum... BYU's system does not allow for 2 QB's to be used simultaneously. Rotating two QB's in and out of plays is asking for trouble. The Cougs need their offense to 'flow' with one QB taking the snap. Splitting time between two guys just throws off any kind of continuity.
