Is the WAC over?

I've been out of the loop these last couple days. So this topic could have came up, but missed it.



With the WAC being short of a couple schools to be a conference, under NCAA guidelines, rules, whatever.



What are they up to? Benson doesn't really seem to be that go-getter type to me, so I'm curious if he'll go get some schools or just kinda shrivel away.



Anyone have any good insight, or is there something in the works out there?

There is a two-year grace period for them to grow. Look for them to add Montana, EWU, and some other FCS schools to get over the limit. They'll survive.

I don't think King Karl can get enough schools in the 2 year time limit. This is why he is working to delay Fresno and Nevada's departure. If he can keep them for 1 or 2 more seasons, he can grab a bunch of FCS schools moving up.



But with the NCAA planning to increase the fee for moving up to over $1 mil and with the ban on moving up still in place for a little while, the WAC may not survive, especially if Hawaii goes indy and LaTech goes CUSA or SunBelt.



Given the remaining teams (NM St, Idaho, SJSU, and Utah St), it is most likely that one could just drop football and 1 or 2 others might drop back down to FCS where they belong.

Hawaii going Indy??? No way that will ever happen.

Probably will. Travel distance and cost does not make them attractive except for football.

Speaking of Hawaii, I have it on a reliable source* that this was Hair's true strategy for taking UNR and FSU:



The end of the WAC will put U. Hawaii in such dire straits, it will fuel the independence movement to the tipping point. The National University of Hawai'i will start a new international sports league with BYU-Hawaii and the other island schools, along with national teams of Samoa, Tonga, etc. This gives Polynesian players a nationalistic option for not going to NCAA schools, thus crippling BYU football so much that we are grateful to be given the chance to stay in the MWC.
