Rumor of New MWC Alignment

Rumors out of Hawaii have stated the following:



The WAC is dead - dissolved.



Utah State and Hawaii will accept an invitation to join the MWC.



The MWC will have twelve teams divided into two divisions: East and West.



The West division will include Hawaii, Fresno, Nevada, SDSU, Boise State, with a sixth team to be named.



The East division will have TCU, USU, CSU, Wyoming, AF, and New Mexico.



BYU will supposedly leave its 19 non-football sports in the MWC, but the football team will go independent.

Any word on if this configuration would have a conference championship?



EDIT: Just realized that what do I care if there is a conference championship if BYU is indy. Would BYU have the same sort of scheduling agreement with the MWC?

The championship game would be played between the 1st place team in each division with a hope of an BCS invite.



The Y would still try and schedule 4-5 teams from the new MWC.

That 6th team would be UNLV

I don't know if all of that is "rumor" so much as it is an obvious/popular idea. Granted, it's certainly possible - but there's not much pointing to it happening other than that it would make pretty good sense compared to most other scenarios.

Flip a coin and replace USU/Hawaii with BYU. I'm not saying that it should be this way, but I just don't see a conference which just went out of its way to blow up BYU's landing stip into the WAC granting BYU a partial membership (plus working with an unbalanced division schedule in Basketball and other sports might also be a problem). I also remember Thompson saying something about not granting concessions to anybody. So unless BYU can pull a WCC rabbit out of its hat by Sep 1st (and find a place to land the 2-3 left over programs that the WCC and MPSF don't support in order to comply with Title iV), BYU is going to be stuck in WAC 2.0 for a while.

more and more "sources" seem to be pointing toward the MWC allowing BYU's non-football sports to stay in the MWC after all.... SURPRISE, the MWC doesn't want to lose their most valuable program.



If BYU could retain their ESPN deal and go indy in football - while keeping all other sports in a stronger MWC - man, talk about your ideal situation.

If this happens, I'd like to see anyone argue that CT "stopped" BYU...

As we noted previously, BYU going Independent in football only and all other sports staying in MWC. Rumor now has it that ESPN will televise 4 BYU home games/yr at $2 million per game (total $8 million). With BYU proving its value to attract viewers/dollars, a B12 invite is likely in the future.

Hang on, I'll right up this rumor in a blog post claiming to have overheard it from someone close to the program, and you can cite to my blog. That should suffice as a source in today's journalistic environment!



Kidding aside, I'm with CougarClaw--I can't rule out BYU's other sports remaining in the MWC while football goes independent, but I have no reason to believe that this is the direction negotiations are heading.

I talked to someone plugged in to the drama out of Ft. Worth, not Provo, and per her, this is what will shake down this week:



Utah State will be reinvited to the MWC, with BYU on the invitation

TCU shot down the idea of inviting Hawaii--Houston will be invited instead.



BYU will remain in the MWC in all other sports but football, and will have an agreement to schedule 4 MWC teams each season in football to help fill OOC slates.

I hope she's right. Basketball will be interesting with 13 teams though.

That would be HUGE if she's right!

That would be best case scenario but it seems less likely then the mwc simply providing tv rights concessions.

As Michael Scott would say it would be a "Win, Win, Win!" situation...



Better competition than WAC, could easily schedule Utah each year, get to test out the new broadcast facility, more moola.



I guess this would mean away games would still be on the mtn though ... :skeptic:

If this is the case, than only the football away games played against MWC teams would be on the mtn or Vs. Since BYU would be indy, their non MWC games would be on ESPN or the BYU athletics channel that will most likely be started up.



B-Ball, and other sports though, stuck on the mtn. :(

interesting though, so if we did just get a concession for TV deal and stay in the MWC, I wonder if we would fight to get all our sports/basketball on our "network" or just football. With independence it sounds like it would just be football on the new TV network/espn.
