Question about the ESPN $$

Reports I've read say $4-5M per year.



Does BYU keep that or is that split somehow with opponents or does ESPN pony up for the them too?

Most reports I have seen say it depends on numbers of games braodcast, and who BYU plays. I rad anywhere from 4-7 games a year, at $1-2M per game, based upon opponent. I would assume Texas in Provo commands $2M, while TCU and Boise State in Provo command decent coin as well. Other conference games would be in the $1M range. As to OOC games, depends. ESPN gets option to acquire minimum of 4 games and chooses which Provo games to broadcast. The other 2-3 could be ESPN, could be BYUtv, could be KSL. Let's remember when this deal was set up, BYU had 4 games v. WAC teams at home, so thats why the lower amount for those 4 games. MWC teams could draw more $$$, or potentially a cut to the MWC per game to make this work .



But what I do know is that BYU broke he BYU Indy story because they were just working he deal with them, so this is no pipe dream as hacks in Denver, San Diego, Ft. Worth and other markets surmise. They have no idea what they speak of.

I have heard (and it DOES make sense) that one reason ESPN was so interested in making the BYU-WAC deal was that it knew BYU was a big draw, and if ESPN put BYU up against WAC teams, it would fill ESPN's contracted obligations to put x-amount of WAC teams on the air, without them actually having to put up a game they didn't want to anyway.



ESPN won't have that luxury if BYU stays in the MWC. I wonder if that won't take the pricetag ESPN is willing to pay BYU down a few dollars.

I had heard 1.5-2M per game but for OOC games like Texas. BYU would offer a guarantee to the other team depending on who it is of up to 750,000 (like Texas). For most MWC-like teams it would be around 250,000. so a portion would be shared but note that the gurantees are already there probably at a lower level under the Mtn contract. Bottom line we would keep most of it. Also note that when we go to Texas we get the guarantee payment.

That is an interesting twist.



Some of the ESPN WAC games this year are dogs.



Incidentally, does ESPN pay less if a game is on ESPN vs. ESPN2 or ESPN3?

Where are you guys hearing all of these ESPN numbers? Is there an article that talked about this? I have also heard said rumors and numbers, but dont know if it is wishful thinking or somewhere was published by ESPN.

What does that have to do with anything?



My original question was-if BYU offers an opponent a $250,000 gurantee to play in Provo who pays it? Does it come out of the $1M ESPN pays for the game or does ESPN pay the guarantee too?

And/or from ticket sales....however, I doubt there is much of a guarantee in the Pitt-Utah game, because Utah plays at Pitt in 2011

What is so difficult about my question?



Everyone on the board is excited about this special ESPN deal and how they are going to "broker" these high profile games. When ESPN "brokers" these kinds of games do they pick up the tab for the visiting team or does it come off the $$ ESPN has paid BYU for the game?



To my knowledge the Utah-Pitt game was not brokered by a TV network. We're not talking about the same thing. Take a pill, Mars.

In the ESPN deal with OU, BYU got like $1.5M for the game and OU got like $2.5M. If ESPN brokers a TV deal at a neutral site, both teams get a cut. But typically the home team gets the only cut in games played at a team stadium because the TV deal is tied to the home team. However, home teams often pay out a portion of the gate for tickets sales, which is often referred to as a "pay day" game for small teams. Utah State heads to OU this year first game for a pay day game and will probably make $700 or $800, or maybe more. So if Texas comes here, I suspect BYU pays them a set amount to cover costs, and when BYU goes to Texas, same thing. But that comes from tickets, not TV. Home team keeps TV.

He's got a point Mars. Do you really thnk anyone at a Utah board could give him information about earning enough money from a game to pay to a vising team? They could talk about beer, and how to comit welfare fraud; but, really, you think ANYONE at that University knows anything about making money at a football game?

There were Utah fans on this board last year asking how much of the Oklahoma money would be shared with the MWC.
