What do you guys think about going to the WCC. I hope it does happen thats a great hoops league.

It is not a great hoops league. Outside of St. Mary's and the Zags, the other 6 teams are about the same as a Utah school.....say like Westminster.

I agree, the WCC is not a good league and St. Mary's has graduated their big man that made them viable for the last 3 years (they also had patty mills who was a solid guard; and st. marys seems to have a nice recruiting connection in austrailia; I still dont' buy them as a perrenial top 25 team). Portland, however, is an up and coming team with a lot of potential and great coaching. It's still a major step down from BYU, UNLV, SDSU, New Mexico, and even Nevada, Fresno State, and probably on par with Wyoming and CSU.



I also think our recruiting might take a dive as a result, and they play in dinky arenas.



I'll say this, we would win 30 games + a year and have some good games with the Zags; but we'd have to have a great non-con schedule to make up for the piss poor conference schedule (the zags have always gotten a great schedule)

The problem is that no one wants to play at the marriott center and that will not change in this setup unless ESPN wheels and deals for us. (they could potentially do that, and I have to assume that's part of the reason the Zags get some teams to go to their place, but often Gonzaga gets the shaft and has to play lots and lots of OOC roadies and neutral court games. The marriott center is too good a venue for us, not to play good teams there, and at least the MWC offers some good conference teams that have no choice buyt to come to our place.)



One major benefit would be not playing in vegas anymore for the mwc conference tourney.



As a basketball first guy and someone that has worked for a D1 program, I'm not in love with the idea of WCC hoops; but it's the best option on the table if BYU goes indy right now. I would however, love to schedule Gonzaga every year but not as a member of their conf; ESPN would have to do some magic to get people to come to our place.

I don't like it. MWC really pulled a fast one on us. WCC is not a good landing spot.

Outside of Gonzaga and St. Mary's, I'm not interested in playing anybody from the WCC.



Basketball is going to take a beating. MWC is a good bball conference and is currently a better basketball conference the Pac-Whatever.

tourney bids aren't the issue; the RPI is. If you think BYU gets bad seeds now, wait til they win 26 a season and still can't budge past an 8 with a 50 rpi.

Warming up to the idea, mostly because this means I get to see BYU come and beat St. Mary's.



We'll have to schedule good non-con games, but the WCC will basically be a two-team conference now between Gonzaga and BYU. My only hope is that this doesn't hurt recruiting. As long as we routinely make it to the NCAA tournament do well there, we should do alright with recruiting.

Another plus is we still get the conference bball tourney in Vegas, but it's at the Orleans, at least through 2012. That will be awesome and we will help them pack that place for the tournament.

I agree with you that Samhan was a significant loss (20.3 ppg 10.9 rpg 2.9 bpg). He was a great player, period. Patty Mills left for the draft after the 2009 season, and was not a part of Saint Mary's Sweet 16 run, so including his name as a reason they won't be viable is a non-sequitur. One could argue he helped with the Aussie pipleline (ex. his presence helped entice some good aussie pick ups like soph Matthew Dellavadova Australia's top prospect in his class) but that influence doesn't diminish because of his departure.



One thing most people don't realize is that after the 09 season the Gaels lost 7 of their top 8 players, and 2 of the top players received season ending injuries early in the season, (including their best defensive player and starter Wayne Hunter) and St Mary's still made it to the Sweet 16. St Mary's will continue to be a very formidable opponent. This season 3 starters return including arguably the nations top 3 point shooter Mickey McConnell (77 3pm out of 151 3pa, 51% 3pp). Next year SMC only loses one senior, same can be said of Gonzaga. If you think that BYU will come in and run the table in the WCC, there's a chance you are sorely mistaken.

Can't wait for some classic St. Mary/Gonzaga/BYU games. Sounds like all three are primed to be very good right now. It wouldn't take much for the WCC to be the best conference in the west.

Neither can I! Just don't sleep on LMU, they're returning pretty much everyone. They're a young, athletic team that will only get better. I agree with you about WCC potentially edging out all other western conferences, thanks in part to BYU. Luckily the Pac 10's down at a time that our conference is on a major uptick. Hopefully we can steal more of their recruits and close the gap, and then pull ahead :crazy:



P.s. Mark your calender for Nov 27th. If SMC and BYU each advance to the finals of the South Padre Island Invitational, we will get a nice preview of 2011-2012.

Every fan hopes their team wins every game.

The realist in me agrees with your sentiment 1-1 against the Zags and BYU would be great.

But the fan in me wants to see Saint Mary's go 16-0 in conference, win the conference tournament title by 80 points and have it close out with frosh Stephen Holt doing a 360 dunk from the 3 point line with 1 second left. The glass from the backboard would magically turns blue and red as it rains on the court, then my favorite Journey song comes on the PA system. In slow motion the SMC cheerleaders walk over to me and then line up and collectively ask me on a date... :evil: lol...sorry got a little carried away.
