QB Battle Day 12

In what may have been the last scrimmage of fall camp both QBs struggled. Heaps led a FG vs the ones and Nelson a TD vs the twos. Heaps had three punts on his four series and Nelson had two on his three.

Day 12 Stats:

Heaps: 8-11-0-55, 0 TDs, 114.73 rating, 72.7% complete, 0 TD drives, 1 FG drive

Nelson: 9-17-0-69, 1 TD, 106.45 rating, 52.9% complete, 1 TD drive.

Fall Camp Stats:

Heaps: 82-141-3-913, 12 TDs, 136.38 rating, 58.2% complete, 14 TD drives 2 FG drives

Nelson: 69-116-2-789, 14 TDs, 153.00 rating, 59.5% complete, 16 TD drives, 5 FG drives.

I gave the passing and scoring edges a push today. Both had one scoring drive. Although Riley's was a TD, it did come against the twos. And while Jake had the slightly higher rating, I thought Riley's TD pass made up for the eight point difference.

I'm still not sure who coaches will name the starter. But I fully expect one to be named this week. I think they want to get a guy ready for Washington. I still really want to see Jake redshirt and while I think RIley has held his own, I'm not sure if he's won the job. I don't think either QB has won the job or proven they alone should be handed the offense.

I still don't think our QB play changes our record. So I would start Riley if UW was tomorrow. I'd try to RS Heaps and give him time to further develop.

A few other thoughts that concern me. Preparation. Whomever we start will be either 1) limited in D1 experience or 2) inexperienced in D1 football. When we named Max Hall the starter (thanks to an injury to Cade Cooper in spring ball), Hall got like 90% of the reps in fall camp to prepare him for the season. So this poses some questions:

- Are we making a mistake by giving Riley and Jake equal reps?

- Did the coaches realize they maybe "over" prepared Max? That he didn't need as many reps as they gave him?

- Are we not going to see either QB come into their own? Of not developing the proper timing with receivers?

I really think we're going to see a QB named this week so that the team can spend the next 10 days getting ready for the season. If the coaches have decided to play Heaps this year, I think he should be the one to get the majority of the reps as I think he has the most to learn and the plays he will run would require more work than the plays Riley will run.

On Cougar Tracks Greg Wrubell asked if the QB situation might extend to game week and Mendenhall answered "probably" or something like that.

I, too, would like to see a Heaps redshirt, but what do we do in 2012 after Nelson has a year to figure out how to be a QB. Kick him to the curb in favor of Heaps? Or have Heaps waste a redshirt freshman season riding backup?

Too bad Nelson isn't a senior. Then it would be easy I think.

I don't figure Mendenhall and co. would hold off naming a starter just to keep UW guessing.

1- When we compare Heaps and Nelson, we seem to focus too much on passing numbers and too little on overall offensive yards and touchdowns. Nelson's running has been both cosistent and impressive this fall camp, none more so than today when he didn't wear a green jersey and was legal to hit.

2- Jake is the better passer, which makes him a stronger downfield threat, and I don't think he can or should be blue-shirted this season.

3- Nelson has been clearly better the past week and a half, though not by much. I'm very comfortable with starting him against Washington right now. And if BYU is losing and Nelson is turning the ball over to leading to too many punts, I'm very comfortable in bringing Heaps in as well.

4- Lark looks very good in limited sets right now. He passes better than Nelson and scrambles better than Heaps. He also hasn't had much trouble with fumbles, INTs, or sacks in camp. He could be a serious player next season, or this season if injuries require it (heaven forbid).

After observing again today, I will admit that even though Heaps is our long-term guy and should therefore see significant PT this year, I now give the edge to Riley Nelson.

If UW were tomorrow, and we dont have very many more of those tomorrows, I would start Riley--not that my opinion matters.

I was more impressed with Riley today in general and over Jake. He seems to have command of the offense and Jake and maybe the team even has more confidence in him. Jake is still using his talents to get the results he does, and there will be a time when we have to throw the ball down field. BUt he is still a freshman. I know a # of you have been repeating that over and over. I'm not down on Jake, how could anybody be down on him, but he is still new.

Maybe Jake would be further along if he did have most of the snaps like Max, as was mentioned previously.

Lark looked good again today. He will be a great back-up and nipping at the heels of Jake and Riley. Although, when people say he can scramble, I havent seen much of that happening this fall.

Aveni looked pretty good today.

It was awesome to elijah (ensah?) on a kick-off. He sped ahead of the cover team and cut across the field to solo tackle Chambers who was moving pretty quickly upfield.

AND, lets hope we dont lose our starting linemen--the 2nd and 3rds still look weak. It's like a no contest. Defense looked good overall.

Oh, and in warm-ups, still alot of dropped passes by TE's. Ugh.

Richard Wilson looked great today.

Heaps should serve an LDS mission. I think Beck, Hall, Collie, Lewis, and numerous others have proved that you can serve a mission and play at the highest levels.

Oh, I forgot. Apo had a highlight real run after a catch. It was called back bc of hold on the O-line. After another catch, Apo hurdled a defender (not as good as Lewis' @ wyoming). Seems like he was trying to step up his visibility. I wonder if he is trying to make up ground as Hoffman has pulled away.

Even Apo isn't named "starter," he will see plenty of plays. His speed and athleticism would be great coming off the bench.

its clear in my mind that bronco is going to have a two qb system until jake takes over. the first quarterback to trot on the field will probably be nelson.

I'm all for a two qb system as long as the offense can get behind it. Both seem to be getting the job done at different times, and have different skill sets. As long as the guys can get behind it, and Anae doesn't try to get too creative, I am all for it.

Who are you to tell someone else to serve a mission? What gives you the right to decide a personal choice for someone else?

Shame on you, and may you return to where you came from.

First series vs UW, trot them both out there. Line up Nelson and Kariya spread with Heaps in the shotgun. Guess who is getting the snap, Huskies? Then switch up the formation and put Nelson in the shotgun. Maybe send him in motion (or just move him out in an effort to "deceive the defense" )

Who is the starter? The one that gets the snap? What if Jake hands off to Riley who then throws?

I also like conspiracy thoery. :bug:

Dude really? Why does everyone get so worked up about missions? If I say that I think a kid should pick a certain school no one gets mad, but isn't that a personal choice? If I say that I think a kid should switch positions, isn't that a personal choice? If I say that a kid should eat vegetables and chicken instead of a burger, isn't that a personal choice? Dude is suggesting what he thinks would be good for someone, ease up.

Who are you to tell him not to tell Jake to serve a mission?!

For that matter, Whom am I to tell you not to tell him to not tell Jake to serve a mission?

(ya, sounds about as rediculous, doesnt it?)

I support anyone who doesn't go on a mission. I can think of a few missionaries in my mission who really didn't want to be there, but went because it was what was expected or all their friends were going. If Jake doesn't want to go a mission, I'll have more respect for him for not going, than doing something he doesn't want to do. Missions are hard enough as it is. No need to make it harder by not wanting to be there.

Amen Kitic... well said.

As for the Heaps/Nelson battle... I don't understand why many of you think that BYU can flourish in a 2 QB system? BYU's offense is not geared or designed to thrive with 2 QB's sharing the snaps and there are only maybe a dozen or so schools that have offenses which can benefit from two, BYU not being among them. Offensive continuity and chemistry is built with one QB under center at BYU, not two. The biggest mistake the coaches can make going into the Washington game is starting Heaps and going with a 2-tier QB system. They need to start Riley and then after the FSU game, evaluate where he is at statistically and determine if Heaps should be given a shot.

This is way off topic, but not me. "Prove me now herewith". I respect someone more who reads the BoM not expecting to gain a testimony than one who doesn't read it at all, or someone who pays tithing not expecting to be blessed over someone who refuses to pay. But this is football- I'll cheer for our RMs, our guys who don't serve missions, and our great non-LDS players like JJ DiLuigi, Brian Logan, etc.
