Is Tom Holmoe doing his job?

I've heard from both sides:

Tom Holmoe is doing his job!

Tom Holmoe isn't doing his job(especially heard this during Utah's acceptance to the PAC, while BYU was being patient)!



Before any public announcement is made from BYU... I'm curious what everyone's take is on him -- And why?



I say yes for a couple reasons.

First off... I like how he tries to schedule schools who are in the National Spotlight at that moment. Like OU, and how they were predicted to return the the National Championship AND with Texas and the recent success for them.

Secondly... I like how he's thinking outside the box with all this Independent-aspect. I love how he's trying to get BYU out there for the world to see.

My personal opinion is that anyone who thinks TH is not doing his job is a clueless idiot. Seriously, what did Utah getting into the PAC-12 have to do with TH? He can't make them take BYU, can't make them call him, can't make them not be religious bigots. The frustration many BYU fans feel now is similar to the frustrations being expressed in Ft. Worth, San Diego and elsewhere--stupid and ridiculous. Gotta understand what you are, and what you are not.



What he can do it use the leverage BYU has to improve the current situation, which is exactly hat is being done right now. He, Pres. Samuelson and all others involved are doing more now to improve the BYU profile and positioning than in recent history. Nothing but respect for the job they are doing.

Agreed! I've heard and read countless times where Cougar fans said Tom hasn't done anything while being AD. He hasn't scheduled anyone worth bragging about(basically all non-BCS schools), yada yada yada. Which I totally disagree with! I believe he's been doing a great job, but I'm curious what others think, have thought, etc...

I think Tom is being smart. BYU is being very quiet and for good reason. There is a lot of misinformation out there and the situation is very fluid. What he says today might be accurate, but it might not be tomorrow night. Why add to the confusion and speculation. I think he and BYU are being very proactive and thoughtful in this situation. He gets two thumbs up from me.

I'm going to say that T Holmoe is one of the bright spots on campus. Certainly an asset.

Let's see: New tv deal in the works and lots more money, game in Jerry World vs OK, series with Texas, playing more Big XII and less PAthetiC 10...yeah, he's doing his job.

This one week of actually doing something doesn't make up for 6 years of incompetence.



Bronco was the 3rd person offered the job (I know TH was only the acting AD at the time, but he was in charge of the search).



Until the OK game, what other good teams did he get to play us? And that was more ESPN and Jerry Jones then TH. BYU became available after Arizona St. dropped off the schedule. And even better, Texas is the first power team that will come to LES that he is responsible for, and that's in 2013. That will be either his 9th or 10th year as AD.



He was incredibly silent during the recent conference expansion time. (This may not actually be his fault, as BYU was just a step slow, like always, with the PR aspect of things.)



Even this week, he gets outsmarted by Craig Thompson. So even on his best week of performance (including the Texas deal), he gets owned by the Hair.



We're probably ending up in the West Coast Conference, playing in 2000 seat arenas every week for basketball. That is a major downgrade, no matter how blue your goggles are.



Please look at all the facts before declaring him the greatest AD in the history of the school. He's not even close.

Just out of curiousity... How did he get owned by The Hair when he hasn't even said what his/BYU's plans are???

No one knows the facts, so how can we? AND... Who declared Holmoe as "the greatest AD in the history"???

I think he is doing a great job.

Stuck, I know you're a long-time poster here, and a good contributor. I mean absolutely no disrespect when I suggest that you are not analyzing with a complete set of facts.



Tom is an EXCELLENT AD, and has done quite well considering the restrictions and obstacles he has dealt with.

As you can imagine, the recipe of Mormons, Higher Education, and the Church does not automatically spell athletic excellence. The Utah Mormon community--especially the well-connected (family) variety--have been known to put significant resources behind certain individuals being hired, or not fired. Second, all institutions of higher learning struggle with the education/athletic mission. But complicating things is BYU's chain of command, which is weighted by incompetent but power-hungry administrators (and no, there will be no names). And finally, as is well-documented, sometimes the athletic department makes decisions based on motives not completely understood by the fans, but in line with the wishes of the Brethren. I think the current independence talk is a good example.

BYU would have participated in the meetings where the MWC discussed inviting Nevada and Fresno. BYU knew it was coming, they just didn't figure that Nevada and Fresno would actually do it with the 5 million buyouts. BYU had insider WAC info that the MWC didn't. The WAC was shocked that they accepted and so was BYU. The WAC is screwed, other than being possibly 10 million richer. For BYU, they lost their deal with the WAC, but GAINED the option of staying in a stronger MWC.



Point is, it didn't blow up in BYU's face. They lost 1 option and gained another. BYU still has 3 possibilities. WCC and independence. Stay in a stronger MWC as is. And stay in the MWC with broadcasting rights. All 3 of these possibilities leave BYU better off than they were last year.

If the MWC was looking to submarine BYU's WAC option, why would they have included BYU in the invitation discussion? I don't think BYU knew those invitations were forthcoming.

He is an excellent AD.

Ask Rondo. He knows who we refer to. Dude had it right all along, just didn't have the same type of support TH gets. Pres. Samuelson is doing a great job with this as well.
