What does BYU want?

What do you think the primary impetus is?

I don't think the BCS has much to do with it. I think you're BSU, TCU or BYU, if you go undefeated you're in a BCS bowl. This whole conference shake up/independence talk doesn't change that.

This move was about exposure and money, which we'd get if we had the broadcast rights to our home games (both football and basketball).

BSU is on ESPN 6 times this year. Two games on ESPN and 4 games on ESPN2.



Anyone know what kind of $$ they get for that? Financially does BSU to the MWC makes sense if they are walking from what I assume is a similar deal to what BYU is hoping to get from ESPN?

Bingo. They are tired of having the likes of utah and others ride their coatails to bigger and better things while byu keeps taking it up the .....



i think its more about exposure then anything though. they can't get good teams to come play them because nobody is going to see the game on the mountain. i thinkt hey want rights for their home games. if they don't get that they probably bolt and let their bbal land in the mcc or whatever its called.



sounds though like the tv stuff is getting worked out.

No fellas, exposure is what is wanted-and although there are other considerations, I'd rank exposure as reasons 1-about 30. The BOT would be willing to make no money if BYU were able to expand exposure for the church.

Boise doesn't have a contract with ESPN. BYU would. Boise gets their share of the WAC conference's contract with ESPN. BYU won't have to share their contract with anyone.

I'm guessing BSU is walking away from $2-3 million from ESPN to about $1.5 million from the MWC's broadcast partners. But someone else here probably knows better.

Wow! No wonder BSU was so desperate to join. And ESPN is apparently willing to give more per BYU game than it was giving BSU per year. Not too shabby.

Consider Boise's competition. Aside from one game or so a year, the rest aren't worthy of the cartoon network.

BSU has been subsidizing Idaho, USU, SJSU, NMSU, and LT for years now.



The entire WAC was making around $5MM a year. Which isn't too much more than Boise State's individual worth.

Holy crap. And it that an equal share or do they get the Texas treament?

Boise as a money maker hasnt' been viable long enough to dictate the terms of a TV package to ESPN while in the WAC. However, they've been good enough to get primo coverage from ESPN.



ESPN is a lot like a casino. They're the house and no matter how good a deal you think you're getting, ESPN always wins in their TV deals. This is one of the reasons that the MWC bailed on ESPN, only to find the option that they created for themselves (the Mtn) came with more baggage.



ESPN has doubled or tripled in size this decade too... they are a monster now and they want BYU; which is a good thing

Bringing to pass the immortality and eternal life of man...Exposure I mean. In my opinion that's what BYU cares about and that's what the Quorum of the 12 will look at before approving. Independence makes sense if you consider it in this context. Regardless of what negatives there are BYU really should go independent, even if our schedule is weaker, the BCS money is more difficult to obtain, big programs refuse to play us, etc...

All I could find was the WAC got about 4 million a year from ESPN and this new contract was quadruple their previous one. With nine WAC teams splitting that money.
