QB Battle Day 11

A mixed bag day. Both threw TDs and INTs. Looks like both INTs were either poor decisions (Heaps) or poor throws (Nelson). One more scrimmage tomorrow. I really wouldn't be surprised to see a QB starter named towards the end of next week. I still think we need to name a starter and start prepping for Washington.



Day 11 Stats:

7-12-1-91, 1 TD, 132.87 rating, 58.3% complete. 1 TD drive.

10-14-1-107, 1 TD, 144.91 rating, 71.4% complete. 1 TD drive, 1 FG drive



Fall Camp Stats:

Heaps: 74-130-3-858, 12 TDs, 138.21 rating, 56.9% complete, 14 TD drives, 1 FG drive

Nelson: 60-99-2-720, 13 TDs, 160.99 rating, 60.6% complete, 15 TD drives, 5 FG drives



I gave the passing edge a push today as both were very effective and their ratings were pretty close. I gave the scoring edge to Nelson. So far through camp, Jake has seven passing and scoring edges. Riley has six passing and eight scoring edges. Jake has 15.75 total points and Riley 15.50.

Kitic, BYU cannot afford to start Heaps, especially against Washington and especially not against FSU. Not only that, BYU coaching staffs (both football and basketball) have a reputation of not starting freshmen players unless there are injuries. The Cougs are gonna need Nelson's scrambling ability big time to start off the season and maybe throughout the entire season owing to Unga's departure and the fact that the running game is going to be mediocre. DeLuigi is not Harvey. Starting Heaps would be a big mistake and the coaches know this and I think Riley knows he's probably going to get the nod as well, which is why he has been performing well going head to head with Heaps who is undoubtedly the one the players and fans see as the next great BYU QB. Heaps is a pure drop-back passer and if he starts against Washington, what do you think Sark is going to do? Blitz all day, forcing a true freshman to make quick decisions against opposing talent he hasn't seen before on the field. Not a good combo. Nelson has the experience and won't get rattled as easily against the Huskies. BYU is going to have a hard time beating Washington no matter who they start, however. Mark my words, it will be Riley.

Welcome to the board Airwolf. Go ahead and read all the QB Battle Day XX threads and then come back and talk. Since you're new to the board (and may not last that long) I'm not going to explain which side of the battle I am on.



If this is the same Airwolf from Cougarboard, I really have no desire to debate with you. You are not an honest debater. You do not believe the arguments you make and simply like to be a contrarian. We've had very lively debates as to whom should be the starting QB. Both sides have respected the other and accepted the reasons each side has and can see the merits the other side makes.



Again, if this is the same Airwolf, you do not have respect for dissenting opinions from your own. So no, I will not respond to the questions you posed.

I always knew this place was full of nice guys, :roll: thanks for the welcome back. Yes, I'm the original Airwolf84, Airwolf, Wolfie, etc. from Cougarblue. I have no desire to debate back and forth with you Kitic about the QB situation… I simply stated my opinion and I am entitled to it… doesn’t mean you have to like it, which is obviously the case. Bronco is not going to start Jake… it’s going to be Riley. Now, if after the game against Florida State (which is gonna be ugly), Nelson isn’t performing all that well, then maybe he decides to see what Heaps can do since they’ll only be facing Nevada and Utah State, which would be a nice time to see what Jake is made of since it would be two games that aren’t against conference opponents and the tougher games are out of the way. I’ll buy you a $6.00 dog and drink if I’m wrong. ;)

I say BYU should either start Heaps and use Riley situationally (not a 2 qb system) or they should start Riley and ease Heaps into the starting role if Riley's performance is suspect or average. Giving the nod to Riley to me is a waste of two years of eligibility on a qb that appears to have a huge upside. If this truly is a rebuilding/or reloading year, why not throw him into the fire when expectations aren't as elevated.

Yeah, but what if Jake decides to serve a mission... he takes one snap and he loses one year of eligibility. The wise thing to do is to start Riley for at least the first 3 games because the Cougs are going to need his scrambling ability vs. the Huskies and especially the 'Noles. Not only that, Nelson has the experience and won't get flustered and frustrated as easily in tough situations. As long as he's performing well, keep him the starter and allow Heaps to learn and grow from the sideline. If he struggles a bit and BYU is 1-2 after 3 weeks, then throw Heaps in and see how he does. It's a no-brainer in my book.



If this truly is a rebuilding/or reloading year, why not throw him into the fire when expectations aren't as elevated.



USC can re-load. Florida can re-load. Miami/FSU can re-load. BYU re-builds.

You wanna know something... when I got banned for the 3rd time, it was for predicting Utah to beat the Cougs by 24 points in 2008 and when the final score was 48-24 and I jumped on the board to have a little fun razzing you guys about it, I was immediately banned. The bottom line is that you can get banned on these BYU forums for being right about something not in BYU's favor and then having some fun with it on the boards. Kinda pathetic if you ask me.

Back on topic, How many series did each get with the 1's?

I like what I see in Heaps -- who couldn't/wouldn't. True freshmen competing against a junior and they have similar numbers (better # if you count how many more times he's gone against the 1's vs. how many times Riley has).

With that said, I think we are going to have a two QB system for the first 4 games and then Heaps will have enough game experience at that point to go the rest of the season.
