Thompson said he has had "very good dialogue" with BYU president Cecil O. Samuelson since Fresno State and Nevada announced they would join the conference. Thompson said the MWC has "shown a willingness to work through some TV issues" in an effort to prevent BYU from declaring its independence.

When and if, the MWC gives us broadcasting independence and I couldn't be happier give the current climate.

If the MWC gives us those broadcasting rights, and BYU goes independent in spite of that this year, with a watered down WCC; I'll never give BYU another dollar for the rest of my life. There's a limit and I think I'll have reached mine considering the WAC idea blew up in our faces.

It's more than enough to take the broadcasting perks and wait on the Big 12 to send us an invite in a couple to few years.

The MWC will already be quite interesting with the new arrivals, if we get the broadcasting priviledges we're asking for we better stay with the MWC.

Honestly I was more mad that the Elaine Michaels firing than I would be over this. I'd certainly prefer to be part of a small private University confernce than this steaming pile of Ute.... I mean... poo

I still think there is more to this than just the tv deal. Just a hunch but I think there may already be plans with the big 12 and going ind will make that trasition seemless because it can take effect immediately (well, after this season if BYU does go indy), otherwise it would be another season before they could go b-12. That would be 2 years of no champ game in Dallas and you-know-who isn't going to be happy about that.

Only way we stay in the MWC is with broadcasting rights, end of story. This move, as outlined by BYU, it to get better exposure and to make more $$$ to compete with the big dogs. Having TV rights gives BYU another $8-10M per year, plus ESPN 4 games a year, minimum. Without TV rights, we are in the same position, or worse, with the new additions because nothing changes as to revenue and TV exposure. The MWC and Comcast have to give in, or BYU still walks because the reasons for leaving still exist in a very real way. And I know BYU will leverage those reasons for every penny they can. And they should.

Personally, I prefer staying if BYU gets what they want. A 12 team MWC in 2 divisions with a title game would be sweet. For hoops too. But if the MWC plays hard ball, I hope BYU tells them good luck and bails. The WCC is not that far of a drop in men;s hoops, and the other sports no one really pays attention to.

Our major complaint was about broadcasting; if the MWC gives us that concession then we better stay. the WCC is a big gamble and one that I'm not at all behind IF the MWC gives in to our demands of some form of broadcasting independence.

Yes, I would be pisssssssed if BYU got that concession and still left. I like the idea of a 12 team MWC, a championship game, and separation between us and TCU.

The alternative (WCC, no home for our track and womens softball) and massive confusion in football independence, is not at all exciting to me.

The WAC plan was actually palatable and certainly viable if the MWC didnt' give in, but that rug got pulled out on us.

If MWC deals with us, you better damn well stay in the MWC.

Lets not jump to conclusions here. It says that the MWC has shown willingness to work through some TV issues. This could mean broadcasting rights or it could be as measly as an extra piece of the TV contract pie. Another thing to remember is that the MTN and the MWC are separate entities. So the MWC can see things one way and the MTN can see things another.

Plus Hair has proven to be a liar the past few days so take whatever he says with caution.
L

This is all about TV rights now, and only TV rights. That is the linchpin to make or break this deal. If BYU gets that, BYU will stay, and it is a win-win for BYU because they get what they wanted without any downside. I hope it goes down this way. But if the MWC does not give BYU exactly what they want, I hope we walk. I will be upset if we don't.

I'll tell you what, I still hope we go indy because I have become absolutely fed up with Thompson and the other schools in the MWC. Buncha lying whiner crybabies who do nothing for us and then bitch about it when we try to get what we deserve. How about we strap a buncha midgets to Fezzik the giant and have him carry them up a mountain, then they can complain when he wants a drink of water...

Yes, the MTN and MWC are two separate entities.. but bottom line is we hold even MORE leverage over the MTN than the MWC. It's conceivable that the MWC could do okay without us, but the MTN would die. We're still in a great negotiating position and we will get the broadcasting rights.

even if we get a viable concession on broadcasting?

not liking a business partner doesn't neccesarily make a bad business partner.

I assure you that if the MWC gives in to the broadcasting demands and BYU still bails there will be one heck of a sh*tstorm and a rift in Cougar nation; particularly because there's no soft landing out there.

And before someone again says "BYU doesn't need your money" you better know how much money that is and how many people would feel exactly the same.

Don't let this be an issue of pride or anger. It's a business decision and business will ge good if we get those broadcasting concessions, but even more important, business will be safe. The MWC is built on a solid enough foundation; we helped build it. Are they the ideal bedfellow? absolutely not, but there isn't a conference out there that doesn't come with some baggage, even the Big 12 (which is why Missouri tried to get out)

I would be appalled if the MWC gave into some of our broadcasting demands and we left for the west coast conference. i would also be devastated.

If the MWC doesn't allow us any freedom in broadcasting, that's a different story. But there are no perfect marriages out there in business.

For me it would have to be the MWC conceding to anything and everything that we demand as far as broadcasting is concerned. They'd really have to show that they're sorry after dragging our name through the mud and telling all kinds of lies. Sometimes it IS worth it to have some pride, even in business.

You're lucky to be a long-time and respected poster here. Had any other user posted such nonsense, the backlash would be out of this world.

I'll never stop giving BYU my money or my support. I'm not claiming to be a better fan than you, just sayin'.

Get back to me when you have money ;) (it's always easier to be idealistic when you're poor, single, and young)

note: Athletic directors and presidents are not immune from taking the temperatures of their boosters before making decisions. Depending on the booster (Phil Knight: oregon Boone Pickens: oklahoma state) they might have more pull than the athletic director.

Now I'm not saying that my financial contributions even make a dent in BYUs coffers, but I'm not the only one that would be sickened by BYUs refusal to stay with the MWC, IF the MWC gives in to a palatable amount of BYUs requests for broadcasting freedom.

But you should read these two sentences that you put in your post together and see if you could apply it to your "I'll never give BYU another dollar" statement

The "they'll never get another penny from me" is clearly a statement of pride and/or anger. Any you're telling BYU that you who does not know all of the facts can make a better business decision than they, who actually do know the facts. And if that is true, keep your thousands of dollars, you're not really an asset to the university anyway...

Independence in the face of concessions from the MWC is a very bad deal. I wouldn't be angry, I'd be done. You act like I'd be the only one that felt that way. We had a viable independence exit strategy and it blew up in our faces; the only way independence now makes sense if it the MWC were not willing to work with us.

You're right, I should ante up and write them a check right now, regardless of the decisions they make. That's pure genius.

Since when are boosters asked to blindly donate to their teams?

I'm sure Phil Knight and Boone Pickens never have any requests before handing their respective schools a pile of cash.
