Big 12's tv contract comes up in 2016. they would invite byu in five years if they were going to expand in prep for new contract. This suggests to me that the BIG 12 really does not intend to expand until their deal is up if at all at the current time and also that BYU made it for 5 years in anticipation of that possibility.
Utah State President Stan Albrecht and WAC Commissioner Karl Benson were the prime brokers of BYU's proposed deal to join the WAC in non-football sports.
A deal was in place for the eight WAC schools (minus Boise State) to align with BYU and remain together for five years.
