KingCougIn all seriousness, nothing has changed from yesterday. Hair can try all the Machiavellian machinations he wants. He can hold lame press conferences where he lies through his teeth. He's simply doing what he's always has. Refuse to acknowledge that BYU is the flagship school of the Mountain West and he continues to assert that we're really just the equal of Wyoming or New Mexico. So what if Fresno and Nevada are coming to the Mountain West? It's not very hard to stick a couple other teams in the WAC. Nor is it hard to have the rest of our non-football sports play in the WCC if needed.
I mean, what are we talking about here?
All women's sports? Nobody cares about those anyway so put 'em wherever.
Men's baseball, cross country, volleyball, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, and track? Inherently more important than women's sports but not really a big in the over all picture deal so put 'em wherever.
Men's basketball? More important than all of the above but a faaaaaaaaaaaar distant 2nd to BYU football.
So it really all comes down to BYU football. That's what matters. That's all that matters. BYU CANNOT just crawl back to the pathetic Mountain West with it's tail between it's legs. It will be neutered. And the Mountain West has nothing to offer them and doesn't appear to want to give them any concessions no matter how much BYU deserves it. If we go back, nobody will take us seriously ever again. Only those BYU fans who have deluded themselves into thinking an AQ bid to the BCS is coming to the Mountain West in 2012 are content to keep wallowing in the Mountain West with a crappy TV deal worth a measly $1.5 million a year, and being televised on the horrible MWC channel. Not mention still stuck playing teams like Wyoming and New Mexico while the Pukes are playing USC and Oregon. Completely unacceptable.
Going indepedent in football gives BYU more freedom, more potential for exposure with both BYU-TV and ESPN, and faaaaaar more money. And let's face it, because of BYU's unique nature, independence should have happened a long time ago. Especially after all the broken promises and incompetence by Hair and the Mountain West. The only key is scheduling. As long as we schedule respectable, nationally known teams, we'll be fine. We have to look beyond just winning another conference championship. We have to look beyond just going to another Vegas Bowl. The ultimate goal, as Bronco has said, is a National Championship. You shoot up much higher in the polls by beating a team like Oklahoma than beating a dozen UNLV's.
BYU has everything it needs for it's football program to go independent. And, once again, that's all that matters. Let's do it.
