Latest "news" out there is that BYU staying in the MWC is back on the table, so long as BYU keeps all rights to broadcast their home football games. Basically, BYU get their cake and gets to eat it too. That leaves the ESPN deal for home games as an option, long with potential BYU-tv games instead of the MTN Network. Allows MTN to broadcast away games in conference. Means BYU still gets that extra coin from ESPN, extra marketing from ESPN, uses it own resources to make more $$$, but still is aligned with the other teams. Win-win, really. If it goes down this way, means we pulled a Texas and helped ourselves big time.

Just fiddling around - I like that tune - it is music to my ears :-)

Cougars stay in the MWC but have full broadcasting rights for their home football games either utilizing ESPN or anyone else they choose (BYUTV). However, away games aren't as good as the broadcasting would be via the MTN, VS, CBSC...

I just don't see that as happening. But I'd be OK with it.... The only problem I have is ESPN is a MONSTER ... I'd hate to have the rights to broadcast our own home football games, but have to have them on Tuesday nights....

This is exactly what I am hoping for. I think this will serve BYU's interests in all sports much better than the original WAC plan.

this could set a precedent for other teams on ESPN's wish list that are in horrible conference TV contracts. Teams like BSU have gotta be figuring a similar way out of the MTN... not that they could Indy but with automatic bid status looming, the power teams in the MWC have some leverage over the network/craig thompson.

I wouldn't go that far. You have reports that that is what they are asking for but you also have butthead thompson stating no concessions will be made. So while they are probably asking for it at this point i haven't heard anything suggesting the mwc is willing to do that.



That would be great. That solves the money and exposure issues we had with the mwc. It would eliminate most of the reasons for going independent. I honestly don't see it happening but am still holding out hope. I don't think we have the leverage unless the tv numbers with comcast are dreadful having byu leave. if that is the case then I would be hopeful that it could get done. it would be win win for all.

Not only is Hair completely unwilling to give BYU any concessions, it wouldn't matter if he was! The Mountain West has nothing to offer BYU that is anywhere close to the benefits from BYU football going independent.

This concession should make the MWC happy. They lose BYU for 6 home games, keep them on for a guaranteed 4 per year with MWC road games, and still keep them for all other sports. They concede 6 games, maybe 7 in a year. And perhaps BYU throws them a bone and gives the MTN 1 game a year after ESPN chooses what they want, and BYU picks which games for BYU-tv. Give the MTN 1 Provo game, unless ESPN buys the entire package.



IT also keep the BCS dream alive, which I think is dumb anyway. BCS $$$ is not that awesome compared to what BYU makes on its own wit h the ESPN deal, but helps the profile of the rest if the conference wins it. Also means BYU comes to each place every other year or 2, which helps those teams sell tickets and season ticket packages. Also means that if 1 more teams comes, a title game in 2012 is on the table, which perhaps could be sold to ESPN since it will be a neutral site game. The other MWC teams would be dumb and prideful to not take that deal.

I suspect that we will need to announce that we are going independent and then the MWC will cave and give us your proposed deal.

BYU should, if it considers staying put, insist tha tlittle brother USU be given another offer - because USU showed loyalty to BYU. I think the USU President's leter was a hint ot let folks know thatthings have changed in the two days since they spurned th eoffer. The MWC doe snot need USU, but th ebasketball team is nice, the football team would improve a bit, and BYu would have a ne wlittle brother - one that knows his place in the food chain. Just make the USU invite for 2012 or 3 - whatever is need to keep it out of the BCS formula. Maybe don't even announce it for a couple of more years until the BCS decision is made.

Just read that USU did get an offer, and turned it down... :whistle: Why would you do that, given the state that the WAC is in right now?

Why? Because USU (along with FSU and Nev) had signed an agreement to stay in the WAC for at least 5 years in order to guarantee to BYU that there would be a WAC to go to. They held up their agreement and the other two WAC schools didn't. Major props to them for sticking to their guns. But, the agreement is now void and USU could be re-invited without having to pay any exit penalty

I have it on good authority that the MWC (and that loser Hair Thompson) are going to have to cave. I think there's a great chance we end up with this or something similar.

I agree. Asking for it and getting it are two different things. The MWC has played some hard ball this week.



What is funny about this proposal is that it is almost the same as what the BYU-WAC deal. That one had 4 WAC games a year, this would be 4 MWC road games a year and 4 MWC BYU home games that we get to keep the money for. I doubt the MWC would go for it unless it looks dire without BYU. I bet that after BYU fully compiles their hand they will lay it on the table and see if the MWC can beat it. If the MWC can provide BYU with what they would get as an independent (or even just close to it), then I bet BYU stays. If the MWC can't....

Utah St didn't turn the MWC bid down due to loyalty. They turned it down because they didn't have the money to buy their way out.

Absolutely a bad bad idea. They bring nothing to the table and would just be one more mouth to feed. I've always been against them even being on our schedule. They do nothing for us and can't be considered a revelry game because they have no chance to beat us. They consider it a moral victory if they even can get within 10 points. It's a no upside and all downside for us, it only weakens our schedule and weakens the conference at a time when we are trying to build and prepare for BCS. We've got to get past this "Champion of Utah schools" mentality if we are ever going to be a player on the national level.

I for one wouldn't mind an invite to USU, I think they will have a decent football program, not a good one but a decent one, but I really like the idea of having them in the conference for basketball. The MWC already is a good basketball conference and by adding USU would make it even better.

Why the hell would you add a team that right now cannot recruit against BYU, just to put them on the same footing as us?



USU is not an option for the MWC, unless BYU leaves.



BYU just has to hold out and see what concessions they can get out of the MWC. If they get nothing, they still stay and wait for a better time to reconsider leaving.



We can let pride cloud our judgement here, the chance to go indy just came and went with the WAC implosion. The WCC is nice but it's a major step back, especially considering we dont' have the WAC to lean on now for football scheduling.
