Whatever comes of this whole situation, we come out looking terrible from a PR standpoint.

1) We pulled the same backroom deals years ago to form the MWC

2) Now (assuming we were working backroom deals to go independent and destroy the MWC) we can viably be seen as the school that tried to destroy the MWC behind their backs. We look like money mongers with inflated egos.

We will not get any concessions from the MWC. We are not even the biggest fish in the MWC pond. TCU and Boise both have much much greater cachet than we do.

I feel like someone from BYU needs to make a statement soon, not necessarily to declare our intentions, but to start a PR campaign to resurrect our dying image....

You may be right about TCU and BSU having BCS bowl games (like that's all that matters anymore), but BYU still fills more stadiums than both those teams combined.

BYU needs to make a statement though, I agree.

I disagree. The MWC will be fine without us and still exist, so BYU kills nothing. Also, Texas just did the same thing, Utah jumped to the PAC-0 for more $$$, and every other school in the MWC would do the exact same thing if they had the leverage. It is business 101. BYU has let the dregs of the MWC coattail it for far too long.

By the way, when we go indy and partner up with ESPN for 4-7 homes games a year, ESPN will rehab any issues for us just fine. No worries at all.

PS Boise and TCU are lightweights compared to BYU. BYU sells more tickets on game day than both those combined, bring millions more viewers to the TV for a game for all sports. And neither of those teams are negotiating wit hESPN for an exclusive deal to broadcast games ESPN choose from 4-7 per yar at $1-2 million per game, based upon opponent. Seriously, BYU dominates the MWC financially.

How did BYU try to destroy the MWC? The MWC would be left with TCU and Boise who, according to you, have a much much greater cachet then BYU.

You can't say that BYU leaving the MWC would destroy the MWC and then say that BYU doesn't have the greatest cachet in the conference. That's a contradiction.

Not saying anything is wrong with looking out for ourselves. BYU is obviously in a different situation as far as fanbase, etc., than most teams. We are still a small fish on a national scale though, and I feel that sometimes our administration, fanbase, etc., overestimate our worth.

We are in the middle of a PR nightmare right now. I am listening to Karl Benson press conference, and it is coming out the BYU tried to orchestrate all of this, and it backfired big time.

We need an official statement, sooner rather than later.

With the local rival fanbases maybe.

I've read dozens of national articles, and almost all of them are extremely supportive of BYU, saying that if anyone is too good for the rest of the non-BCS conferences and able to go independent smoothly and financially successfully, it's us.

Wrong, wrong wrong. ESPN was willing to broadcast 4-7 home games a year for us. How does that make us small or overestimate our worth. It means we went out and FOUND out what our worth is on the market. We can use that now in many ways.

Plus, most people I talk to think it was a great move, because most people could care less about the MWC. If anything is overvalued here it is the MWC's worth. Back east, no one gives a rip out the MWC, just BYU, TCU and BSU. the rest are nothing.

BYU needs to do nothing until they know what their course is, and not until then.

Benson might be trying to throw BYu under the bus, but it is part of his pathetic leadership style and desperate, poor little me/us syndrome.

This is not a nightmare.

Maybe Westidahocoug you are more atuned to the BSU fan perspective. My BSU friend texted me yesterday morning with understandable frustrations of BYU bailing on MWC, bc their big motive was to help MWC get AQ status bc the knew they could never get AQ status in the WAC-job.

Benson gets my praise for sticking around for so long, but he has hit the ceiling career-wise and he's covering his fanny. Still looks very very weak.

I disagree. Shady backroom dealings doesnt seem to be in the mission of BYU. It seems that somehow that mission has been lost. BYU has been less than above board with all of this, and obviously are in a tough position.

BYU now needs the MWC. They cannot stand as an independent without either the MWC or WAC. Why else would we have to sign an agreement to play 4 or 6 WAC teams as part of our independent slate. We can't make it as an independent without playing current WAC or MWC members. We have some serious egg on our face.

A statement from BYU would be nice, we are getting ripped big time for this.

Just a few samplings I am seeing from MWC fans and BSU fans~~the general consensus of those fans who have been watching this transpire are pissed as hell at BYU. The regular joe schmoe fans that don't eat, breath, sleep college football probably aren't even aware that FSU and UNR will be coming to the MWC And the BYU was trying to go indy. What I am not sure of is what percent are breeds like us (live, eat, breath, sleep) and what percent are regular joe schmoes that don't even have a clue? Also in 5 years will this really be that big of a deal or will this all be smoothed over? I don't think right now that the regular joe schmoe cares about all this "shuffling/chess game".

Shady backroom deals? How about Due diligence? with any merger there is a peak under the kilt approach that helps make sure everybody knows what they are getting. Benson is complicit with this, in survival mode, he is just not acknowledging his part. Makes me wonder if BYU has bailed on him too now because he cant deliver what BYU required and he is now feeling doubly jilted.

You dont think BSU had questionable ethics by bailing on their WAC brothers? You dont think their due diligence did not include closed doors prior to announcing?

Patience is a virtue. But yes, they need and will press conf soon.

Dude, stop listening to Boise State fans. Nationally, no one cares and most consider it a strong and smart move who get the details. What do we owe Boise State? They are not even a conference member. And why does BYU need to broadcast its plans before they are set in stone? Being silent does not make it shady, or back room. Seriously, the Boise in you is coming out too much. Plus, the MWC went down that way because BYU, Utah and many other schools made that deal, not just BYU. Why the BYU hate today?

And honestly, why should BYU care what Boise State fans think about this? Really, why? They might be frrustrated, but they do the exact same thing if offered. Hypocrisy to deny that.

I am not talking about BSU. In fact, BSU publicly made it known that they wanted to be in the MWC for the last two years. That seems pretty above board.

I am personally dissapointed in BYU's actions that have potreyed a bad image; that reflects on the church. This is getting bad. Poor PR and ethics for an LDS representative is never good.

Regardless of what any BSU fan thinks, BYU has some serious egg on their face. Dont think so? Look at most every news site out there, and non-mwc, non BSU message boards.

You mean to tell me that the average fan doesn't like BYU?

** GASP ** We have to do something about that, quick!

I agree with the post that the national media are giving BYU fairly positive coverage. They consider the closed-door dealings a normal part of the game. MWC-WAC market (beyond SLC) coverage is almost entirely anti-BYU, but it is on any given day, right?

I applaud BYU for working to get all its ducks in a row before it makes a big statement; if it had to retract that, that would really be egg on the face. I hope that Holmoe/Samuelsen is staying in communication with everyone important (not us) behind the scenes at least. However, the news out of the MWC is conflicting: BYU voted in favor of FSU/UNR expansion (thus killing their WAC parachute), yet Thompson is acting like BYU is shafting him? What is going on?

I'm looking forward to this resolving itself (soon I hope) in a manner just as surprising to all the rumor-mongers as June did.

MIght recommend a few bars of valium westidaho.

As B Young and modern business marketing would suggest, there is no bad press.

the irony is TH and BYU have been wanting to create larger exposure. well, its certainly happening the last few days.

The bigger picture and end in mind will all become clear in the near future. This is not just about BYU football. Its one very big piece, of course, but the Brethren understand the marketing value of football and BYU athletics and they have tolerated obscurity long enough. Why else would they have a full HD truck and a state-of-the-art Broadcast facility (almost completed)? Because they want to impress everyone and spend lots of money? Its called provident living, being able to provide when other sources fail.

It may be a little metamorphically-messy yesterday and today and even the next few days, but "it will work out in the end" (GBH)
C
CannonCougar85
So BYU is supposed to sit back and just let everybody walk all over them because we don't want to step on anyones toes? Give me a break. BYU is doing what it has to do to get the exposure that it and the church want. It's done behind the scenes of course but what business in the world lays all their cards on the table for everyone to see? The church doesn't even do that.
W
westidahocougar
What part of all these dealings has been honest? How do all these dealings fit in with the honor code?

We look very bad to talk about being so sanctimonious with our actions, when in reality we have been unethical in our ways of achieving greater exposure and more money.

Shame on BYU and shame on us for justifying their actions.
