BYU's Choices

Door A- Stay in the MWC (which likely goes to 12 by adding Houston).



Door B- Go independent in football, figure out how to stay in the MWC in all other sports (Houston/UTEP possible all-sports additions).



Door C- Go independent in football, join the WAC in all other sports (6 teams needed for a basketball conference, and the WAC would have 7 with BYU... possibility of adding enough I-AA teams to survive in football, but who cares if every team in the league drops football as long as the conference survives in men's basketball and the other sports).



Door D- Go independent in football, join Gonzaga, St. Mary's, and Co. in the WCC in most other sports.





~ESPN reportedly would have paid BYU $4MM/year to join the WAC (who has a football/basketball ESPN contract), to televise 4 home games a year, and to play 4 games against WAC schools a year.



*Question: If the WAC folds and BYU joins the WCC, which has no I-A football teams, how much would ESPN be willing to pay us at that point?

E - Stay in the MWC, with concessions made for the teams biggest revenue getter, and better tv deal, etc. That is not an option, in real life, or in this poll - so D or C. We look weak if we expect concessions, and then fold to Hair.

Personally, I don't like what Texas did in the Big 12, and I don't want us to make the same power play. I just don't want a lot of conferences to start heading down that road, plus we need for the other schools in our conference to get better in order for our wins to mean more. We don't help the cause by taking what little money there is. The only Texas-like concession I would like to see, would be for BYU to be allowed to use their own network more.



If we're willing to hang in there for the short term, the next TV deal will be a much better one and the Mountain West will be a much bigger profit generator than it has in the past.

Texas shouldn't have to float dead weight any more than we should. BYU loses money in the MWC. I think BYU should make exactly the same power play as Texas. We're the best, bring in the most money, and it's time we're in charge for a while.

Exactly, I don't get the, "we should look after everyone else attitude", 'cause they definately wouldn't be looking after us if they were in our position.

I don't see why anybody would want to stay in the MWC at this point. Now BYU will get an even smaller piece of the pie which means they will lose even more money. So now that we added the huge metropolitan areas of Reno and Fresno suddenly we will get this huge contract from Comcast? Gimme a break.



And another thing, do we really believe that this whole deal that BYU has spent millions of dollars on and years of planning hinged on Fresno and Nevada? That if they left the WAC it would all fall apart? BYU still has tons of power here.

The ACC doubled their TV contract by adding no one in new negotiations recently.

The PAC-10 expects to nearly double their TV contract despite adding two nobodies.

The Big XII lost two schools and expects to see their TV contract pie increase overall.



College football is simply worth more now than it was 5 years ago.

MOve forward. Get out. Did BYU think there wouldnt be a counter punch or other barriers? If they did, they were as naive as when they inked the origianl deal with the The MTN. Hopefully BYU learned their lesson on the first sham and scam concocted by Thompson.

The MWC is stuck more now than ever as a fully ensconsed MId-Major. The AQ Conferences and the whole BSC must be laughing last night into today. Thompson secured survivability as a mid-major--that is all! If he thinks they are stronger, it is only in relation to the mortality he was facing with departure by the U and BYU.

2016! 2016! Who gives a flying ratsass about what happens in 2016! That's SEVEN bloody football seasons away! That's an ETERNITY in CF! How many conferences will there be in 2016? 4? 5? Will there even be a MWC? Will there even be an NCAA in 2016?



Who gives a crap about what happens SEVEN years from now! Let's worry about 2011 first.

So in 6 years we could potentially getting 3.6 million to split between 12-16 teams. Now that you put it that way, there's NO WAY we can afford to walk away from this deal!

What about $4 million from ESPN for 4 games

lets be conservative and say $500k for the remaining 8 games = $4 million

plus rebroadcast rights for all games = who knows how much

even if they go to one crappy bowl game = $1 million

So I see a minimum of $9 million
