Why Fresno and Nevada joining the MWC doesn't matter

For those back peddling on BYU going independent because we Fresno St and Nevada may be joining the MWC, here are a few things to think about.



1. Who cares about Fresno and Nevada? Having them in the MWC does nothing for us. They are just two more non-relevant football schools that are just trying to grab at anything to help their situation. So Boise St gets to keep their WAC rival (Fresno) and UNLV gets their rival (Nevada) in the MWC. May be good for them - but it doesn't do anything for us.



2. Sure it was good to see Boise State join the MWC, but playing on the blue turf every two years doesn't excite me. It could turn out more of a trap game like the Hawaii game use to be. And if we want to play Boise St every couple of years we now have the freedom to do so, on our terms. They want to play us regardless of whether or not we're in the MWC.



3. Fresno St. and Nevada will be nothing more then good competition for Wyoming, New Mexico, CSU and UNLV. The MWC is no longer a legitimate conference without BYU and Utah. TCU and Boise St are now the top dogs. Seriously, with us gone the MWC is nothing more then a juiced up WAC.



4. Who wants to travel to Fresno or Reno for a road game? Wasn't having Laramie on our schedule bad enough? If we stay in the MWC our conference road schedule would be the worst it has every been.



5. There is no way we can't do better as an independent. At the very least we will play the top teams of the MWC (Boise St, TCU, Air Force) because we will offer them MONEY to play us on our own HD network. ESPN will broker at least a couple of quality games a year. And we will be a able to get a one or two good games with other conferences. The other games will be much needed cream puff games that every quality football team plays.



Once the novelty of Fresno and Nevada joining the MWC wears off we will realize that Thompson is just trying to do every thing he can to keep the MWC alive. We're done with the MWC. Independence is going to be great.



PS. The other sport will be fine. We will find a conference to play in with no problem.

Well, Hair is having a conference tonight, and it will be broadcast at 9:15 on CBSSports. So tune in. Willing to bet it is to announce FSU and UNR joined the MWC. Also bet it will be silent on anything to do with BYU. I think Hair is trying to get ahead of the story, or at least teh MWC is. I still think BYU jumps.

hope you are not talkinga bout me. i was never for it so how would i be backpedaling.



and it think the answer to the first question is the byu basketball team and every other non football athlete at byu. it will hurt all those teams big time. the wac now has 6 teams. how is that going to work. i guess they will add a few more sucky teams that we can look forward to playing each year. byu officially has NOBODY in basketball on their schedule that is any good at all.

Along with the rumor that FSU and UNR are joining the MWC there is the rumor that says that UNLV and SDSU will follow BYU to the WAC for basketball. If that happens then suddenly the WAC is a more powerful basketball conference then the MWC.



All rumors of course.



PS. The only thing official is the invite to FSU and UNR, those schools accepting the invite is the rumor.

I heard that about UNLV and San Diego, but can't confirm any of that. Does anyone know a thing about it???

Sure, like Fresno St and Nevada. We should definitely give up millions of dollars, better TV exposure and the freedom to play better football teams in exchange for our basketball team to play a home and home with powerhouses such as Fresno St, Nevada, Boise St and TCU. Let's see, I would rate each of these basketball teams as...suck, suck, suck, and let's see...TCU....oh yeah, and suck!!!!!!

I can't see UNLV and San Diego St. jumping to the WAC just for basketball. Football makes the money and so why downgrade to a weaker football conference just for basketball? They would be taking a pay cut for what benefit?



Also, BYU's stay in the WAC being would be unstable at best with a potential Big 12 invite coming soon.

i think you are looking at this a little narrowly. so what "better" football teams are we going to play? Who wants to schedule with byu? it will now be the reamining 6 wac teams, air force, navy, and utah. fill in the blank spaces with whoever we can scratch together. byu basketball will be destroyed if we make the move now. they will have nobody on their schedule to play. in the mwc they have sdsu, new mexico, unlv and now nevada, all of which were better than any team in the pac10 last year. if they move they now have utah state. thats it.



i think my fan level rating is obviously tongue in cheek. i am always annoyed with people questioning other's fan levels and fans trying out fan each other. its my little way of making fun of that crap.

I am just so ticked off at hair thompson. how did the moron at the wac let this happen. he basically stopped byu's plans in their tracks.

UNLV I don't see, since they were apparently such a big factor in inviting Nevada (if you believe UNR's President), but if you're SDSU, who seems to be on their way up, playing football in the WAC could mean finishing in the Top 3 in the conference (plus bowl eligibility) instead of being a perennial fifth place team in the new, no-BYU MWC.

UNLV I don't see, since they were apparently such a big factor in inviting Nevada (if you believe UNR's President), but if you're SDSU, who seems to be on their way up, playing football in the WAC could mean finishing in the Top 3 in the conference (plus bowl eligibility) instead of being a perennial fifth place team in the new, no-BYU MWC.

Not to mention that San Diego State would get to keep the only team that consistently draws fans into their football stadium!

Fresno State, TCU, BSU... BYU can still get games with these teams if they want to. It gives the other team a sold out stadium (if we're visiting) and national exposure.

I really think Thompson used the FSU/Nevada invites as a preemptive strike against what he thinks is BYU bailing on him. That sucker can rot in *@#^. I think BYU joining the raided WAC is out of the question.
