BYU = Texas ?

Curious,



Since BYU is "looking at it's options" which obviously equates to making more money, whether it be through independence, or a better TV contract with the MWC. Is BYU no different than Texas was in it's expansion pursuits? Although Texas got a bigger piece of pie than we will, I find our actions similar.



I recall some on this board accusing Texas of being a bully/ greedy, etc. during the whole Big 12 fiasco. Now that BYU's departure (if they depart) is basically the nail in the coffin for the MWC getting AQ status, we're going to be hated among the MWC, probably more so than Utah. Are we the Texas of the mid-major programs? If so, are we greedy, and a bully for doing this?

Yes. Yes. So what. I never faulted Texas for trying to get a better deal. The real enigma is why the SEC doesn't have a tiered system. You really think Vandy is bringing in that $20M a year? Its supply and demand. The teams creating more demand should get a larger share.

Depends on what side you are on. Everyone else is going to think we are greedy. Is Brett Farve greedy for taking his agreed up on $13 Million plus $3 Mill more and another potential $4 Mill in bonuses? No he is a good negotiator and understands his value in the market. That is something BYU has never understood is it's value in the market, they could throw their weight around alot more than they do but they just don't do it. This is one example where they are, but in my opinion they are still being way too nice about things.

In my opinion, BYU is not even remotely similar to Texas in the amount of clout and power UT wields over part of the CFB landscape (namely the Big12 region).

I'd love to see BYU step on the MTN and the MWC's neck! they could start out by having the church purchase the MTN and then burn it to the ground!!

in most people's opinion you would be correct. he is not comparing BYU's clout and power to Texas', he's merely comparing the negotiating position BYU is in to Texas'.

I see, I misunderstood his point. UT is pretty rare in the sports world with how much of their weight they can throw around.

Agreed, but that weight will only last as long as they are winning, then it will be someone else's turn.

Of course this is not at all the context of the thread. Even opposing fans are expected to read and then think before posting.



BYU is in a comparable situation in MWC terms that Texas was just a while back. The question is what BYU does with their leverage. Up until the WAC began to implode it looked like ESPN BYU and the WAC had a nice system in theory. A theory I clung to all day and was quite wrong about.



BYU still has leverage except that it might not be in our best interest to leave if the WAC brings nothing to the table for out non football sports. The WAC or ESPN (or both) need to up the ante now. BYU can still angle with the MWC for some extra freedom/concessions because we're free to do what we want until September 1st. (3 days before we beat the huskies at our place)



Texas held the Big 12 hostage for a few weeks; it looks like BYU might hold the MWC for a couple weeks... hard to tell. If BYu returns to the MWC, it will be likened to the Texas/Big 12 mess by the national media.



At least we stopped talking about the quarterback situation for the time being....



and we snagged a future NFL left tackle from the clutches of the ewetes.

If they don't and BYU stays with Fresno St and Nevada moving, the WAC will be on par with the Sun Belt Conf., if they're lucky.
