Independence is official

Listening to 1280 (compromising my integrity for BYU news) and they are saying it is official, referencing the Chicago Tribune, among others. Not sure if it is already a thread, not at my cpu.

Here's a link from the deseret news saying it's all but official right now that BYU will be going independent in football and the other sports joining the WAC. There's interesting information in the article about Boise being able to back out and return to the WAC if they decide and other MWC schools possibly joining the WAC with BYU.

I say we begin a new rivalry with Notre Dame. Play them each year for a true "Holy War". That could be big. Still play Utah because that can be a quality win over a Pac 12 school, I suppose--but forget about them as a rival. Let's return them to the insignificant status on our radar. Thinking about it, I guess there is no erasing Utah as our rival if we still play them. Let's still try to regularly schedule Notre Dame, though.

I think Boise backs out, dropping the MWC to 7 teams. TCU bolts for the WAC asap and the MWC crumbles entirely. Crazy turn of events.



You have to have 8 teams to be an FBS conference. The MWC can't add any WAC teams because they all have a $5 million buyout. The MWC should have invited 3 WAC teams as soon as it was announced that Utah was leaving. I don't know who the MWC could possibly get to make 8 teams considering TCU would obviously be leaving. If Boise backs out, the MWC WILL collapse.



I don't know what the remaining MWC teams are even going to do. Go back to a 16 team WAC? Would the WAC even want to do that?



Hopefully TCU being desperate for a conference would heat up the Big 12 talks for both them and BYU.

I'm calling BS on this "source."



It's not official until BYU says it is, and anything coming out of USU or the WAC can't be trusted right now.

Sammich, youre probably safe being safe, but when the whole world around says it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, and smells like a duck.....and not just Arnett......it might just be a duck. But, never hurts to wait.

It is a little surprising hearing Bronco saying 'he knows nothing', if thats even a credible source. But when an official source, anywhere, resorts to "no comment" such as came from a BYU Official today, you know its all but a done deal.

BYU would not and will not announce unless there's a deal in place with ESPN and the church leaders have signed on. My feeling is that this must have been in the works since the day that the Big 12 refused to expand.



This could be a historical week in BYU history; very very exciting.



I hope the hysteria doesn't effect the young football team as they prepare for this wonderful transition season.



Worst possible scenario, we back out before Sept 1. It's a win win.



For all the times that the conference has taken us for granted..... they've gotta be panicking now.

Yeah, kind of like when the pac 16 was imminent right.

1. Utah

2. Utah St.

3. Fresno St/WAC opponent

4. Boise St.

5. Hawaii

6. Nevada/WAC opponent

7. Notre Dame

8. Navy

9. Army

10. TCU/Big 12 opponent

11. Cupcake/ D 1-AA

12. Pac 12

(we also could schedule a 7th home game I believe every other year if we play Hawaii each year.)



Just think about season tickets with that kind of schedule!

The only thing that i am kind of enjoying about this is the look on those idiot moutain people's faces that have taken us for granted all these years. they are now looking at losing their jobs and thinking, crap. makes me feel good inside.

byu still could be pulling a texas here, but it is less likely because byu does not have as much to gain as texas did. even if they get more from the pie its still way less than indy status gives.



i think that if espn has made a deal that it will happen barring something wierd.

3)BSU(WAC)

4)TCU (??)

5)Navy

6)AFA

7)random WAC team

8)random WAC team

9)PAC 12

10) BCS team (Big 12, ACC, etc)

11)MWC team

12)MWC team



Notre Dame will not happen annually. And no need to play 5 WAC teams, 4 is fine.

I'm buying.



If you read ESPN's article carefully, it's pretty clear all of their "sources" are coming in house:

"I'm not sure how it could stop now unless BYU gets nervous," one source with knowledge of the situation said.

That's a quote coming from the opposite side of the bargaining table from BYU, and that's right where ESPN is sitting.



However, that said, it's not "official" until we have a statement from BYU.

I just don't get the timing of it all: you're one year out from finding out if the MWC is the next BCS conference, and although it's unlikely, there's still a chance. We have a much better chance of winning the MWC crown every year than being ranked #5 or above every year. I don't know that I buy it just yet.

I think it's great to not have to play the MWC creampuffs year in and year out. We can now set our own schedule and play the teams that will benefit us the most. Assuming ESPN is in on all of this, what a deal!

This schedule is not good enough for an independent to be considered for BCS games. BYU would need to be much more aggressive in scheduling than this. They will need to add Big 10 and Big 12 teams along with one or two east coast teams per year for exposure there. Going 7-4 with a tough schedule beats going 10-2 with cupcakes any time!
