Andy Katz says BYU considering Independence

BYU, according to sources, was stunned that an invitation didn't come its way as the Pac-10 first invited the Big 12's Colorado and then turned to Utah to become the Pac-12 earlier this summer.

His "sources" are dead wrong on this point. BYU has known for years that the PAC would never invite them due to their religious affiliation.

According to multiple sources, BYU would have to get a gauge from the BCS if it could get access similar to that of Notre Dame

I'm not even sure what the requirements for ND are. Is it top 8 and they are in a BCS game? Is that the only requirement?



But yeah I wouldn't trust the BCS any more then I'd trust the French army to protect me.

This would be amazing but I'll believe it when I see it. BYU is so freaking conservative though, I wouldn't be surprised if they did make an announcement and the announcement was that they may make an announcement next year or something. I would think scheduling would be a cake walk for us if we were independent and I also think getting into the top 8 consistently would be very doable for BYU. Right now we've got to be top 2 to get in and be undefeated. this could be really cool but I"m not getting my hopes up just yet.



If we were to go independent, i say dump the rivalry game with those homos up north.

on a side note, wouldn't keeping non-football sports in the MWC be a better option than the WAC? Has Hair said something that they wouldn't want us?

I agree, I think that people who say that a schedule will be harder to come by, really don't know what they're talking about. I honestly think that the biggest reason people are scared to schedule us now, is they know they very well could lose to a team that they should cream because they're only in the Mtn. West, and if that team does beat BYU then they don't really get credit either (in most cases), because they were supposed to beat us. Now there's much more to it, if we're not in a mediocre conference such as the Mtn. West. So obviously it should make scheduling easier as the teams we face know that it will no longer be a lose lose situation.

So none of the locals have picked up on any of this yet...maybe they are wanting to verify sources first? Awhile back there was talk how social media will be a bigger and faster news outlet than traditional media ( newspapers or their websites, tv, radio, etc)...this really may be true...the social networks like Twitter and FB are getting news out quick...it just comes down to reliability I guess.

I keep saying that none of this could possibly be true (the timetable). But it's getting harder and harder to fight it.



First and foremost, I just think it's ridiculous to have any kind of knee-jerk reaction to the Pukes-to-Pac10 deal. Indy might very well be a viable option and if any team other than ND or the service academies could do it, I believe BYU could. I just don't know that we'd be much better off as independents than in the MWC. But the bottom line is at least wait until this next season is over to see if the conference has a shot at AQ-inclusion. I really think we stand a good chance at it. And as bad as the bottom half of the MWC competition is in football, at least there is some competition in the other sports, unlike the WAC.

And local media really have a lot more to lose by releasing information too early, they could lose those contacts with BYU. For example maybe Wrubell has known for a long time but was told to keep his mouth shut until the time is right.

I also somewhat like the idea, of playing in the WAC for every other sport. We would totally and absolutely dominate basketball. Ut. St would be just about the only one that could put up a fight.

Yeah, I didn't think about it in that light. The local guys would definitely bite the hand that feeds if they squawked too soon.

If the rumors are true there is no way that this is a knee jerk reaction. We know how conservative and careful BYU and the Church are with these things. BYU would have to have BCS agreements, schedules set, TV contracts worked out, etc before they would ever declare independence. You don't just wake up one morning and say Hey lets go independent today!! You cannot hammer all of those things out in the short time it has been since Utah left.



If BYU is going independent then it means that BYU has been working behind the scenes for YEARS getting it all set up and ready if the opportunity so presented itself.

The only reason why it makes sense to move so quickly on this is the fact that the bylaws for the MWC state you have to give a one year notice by September 1st of the year prior to leaving....For whatever reason if they want out next year the need to speak soon or else then it is two years out. So if BYU wants to leave the conference in 2011, they have to notify the MWC by SEP 1 this year.

BYU would not make any announcement if the BCS deal was not worked out right? This deal is so complex that not even conservative BYU can get all of their ducks in a row before announcing.

So why couldn't we play the season out to see if the MWC can get a 75-80% win percentage in the non-con this season and see which MWC team goes to a BCS bowl? If this happens, we'd have to drop pretty far in the fourth year of the BCS evaluation (2011 season) to not win AQ status IMO. If things don't go well this season, we could always bail by September 1st of 2011 to play the 2012 season Indy just like Utah announced this summer they are leaving in one year to play in the Pac-10 in 2011.
