Dick harmon has a good point here in his article: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700057642/Pros-and-cons-for-BYU-naming-a-starting-QB-now.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

TCU has 120-play scrimmages and senior starter Andy Dalton is getting a majority of the snaps to polish his game. BYU, which goes about 70 plays in scrimmages, is splitting up its reps three or four ways. Last Saturday, Heaps got 23 plays, Nelson 17, and Jason Munns and James Lark had 15 each. If you operate with 40 to 50 fewer scrimmage plays than TCU because of a streamlined system, BYU's starting QB has to be efficient and can only do so with more reps.

We need to pick a starter and start getting him the reps he needs to be ready for the season. By the end of this week Bronco needs to make up his mind in my opinion if things continue to stay the same.

Bronco has always been big on going lighter with the full pads hitting and work. Obviously, TCU likes to go full on more. I think we will benefit from more reps right now for sure. Even if they are split.

I've been saying this for a while. Those who support not naming a starter until game time in order to surprise UW are over stating the advantage of doing so. It's not like UW is going to come out and freak out that Riley is starting and all of the sudden forget to play defense. For example, we know exactly who Christian Ponder and Jake Locker are and what they do and guess what? It doesn't matter! They are going to come out and run their butts off and score TD's on BYU. We need Reps. This QB competition needs to end right now if we are going to be good. If you want to go 1-3 in non-conference fine, keep having this QB battle but if you want to have a shot in hell at beating UW and FSU and Nevada, name a starter this week....and USU for that matter. Max Hall had a hard time beating USU last year, think about it Bronco.

LOL. Harmon fooled you all. Either that or he is a sloppy reporter. My guess is the latter.

Dalton didn't take the majority of the snaps "to polish his game" as Harmon surmises. One of the guys fighting for the backup QB spot, Yogi Gallegos, was injured the afternoon before, and Patterson gave his snaps to Dalton. So Dalton took the #1 and #2 snaps, with #3 and #4 taking their respective snaps. Barring the kid tweaking something the day before, Dalton takes about half the snaps he ended up taking.

35-17 does sound like a tremendous struggle... but even if it were, how does the 'struggles' of a 3 year starter in his senior year relate to your point?

Though this is the fiercest QB battle Mendenhall has had in his five years, this isn't his first rodeo, and 49-15 suggests he knows something about coaching. I can't get worried about this decision just yet. Maybe by this time next week....

Ummm, really? We were up two TDs by halftime, and it was a 4 score beatdown until the last USU touchdown with :03 left in the 4th. Hall had a 69.6 completion percentage, gained 9.5 yards per pass, and a QB rating of 174.83 with 3 TDs and 2 INTs. Doesn't sound like a hard time to me.

Bronco knows what he's doing, and I'm glad he's being patient and making an important situation like this right instead of just fast. He and his staff will put who they feel is the best one for the job into that job when they know who that is and that they are ready for it. The last 4 years' results show that they are pretty good at doing that.

You can't minimize the impact of a team not knowing who to prepare for, especially in the first game of the year. I think that naming a starter sooner rather then later is better for BYU but I would like them to close practice and not let anyone know who is the starter until they trot out onto the field on Sept 4th. In fact, run both Heaps and Nelson out on the field and then whoever takes the snap, the other goes into a pass pattern to fool the defense, then we go to normal plays.

I can. At least, I can suggest that since neither Nelson nor Heaps started a game for BYU last year, and this is game #1, that it almost doesn't matter if Washington knows who the starter is or not, since they can't break down much relative game film for either at this point.

Other then the fact that one is a running QB and the other is a pocket passer. You have 2 totally different game plans for each type of QB.

Hey QBU, you must be in the heaps camp, cause you just panicked and chucked the ball 50 yards down the field hoping by some miracle, somebody would catch it. its the kind of High School mentality that Jake needs to lose--and you might consider it to.

Easy does it fella. Its all going to work out for the better.

Even taking only half those snaps, that is still almost as many snaps TOTAL that byu is providing to all four of its qbs. So even if jake was getting half, he is still getting 50 percent of those snaps dalton is getting and dalton is a senior.

I am not saying byu needs to change its philosophy, but if there was anythign we need right now for our quarterback it would be snaps and lots of em.

Agreed--once you have a quarterback picked.

I was just pointing out that Harmon was reading a motive into the TCU scrimmage that simply wasn't there. That's all.

I see and agree. I was suprised to see such crappy and misleading reporting by Dick.

Bronco will name a atarting QB on Saturday, or by Monday's practice. That gives the starter a full two weeks to "polish", etc. And what UW knows is irrelevant, Heaps or Nelson, makes no difference to UW's preparation, since neither has enough history to matter. And let's keep in mind, there is no game preparation going on right now, it's conditioning, testing, learning plays, finding leaders--that is what Bronco is doing. Naming a starter today, or tomorrow, does nothing. The starter will be named before practice on Monday.

Either that, or we'll have dual starters the day of the Washington game <----- More likely

So who won the scrimmage battle of QB's today? Amazing that the QB talk was dropped today. Sounds like Heaps bounced back from a tough day yesterday nicely, and Riley was sound as well. But that the D dominated--again. I sure hope our defense is awesome, or we are in for some trouble. It is nice to hear that the BYU secondary is playing the tightest coverages since 1996, per media reports. Means Bronco will be aggressive with that 3-4. Also means our receivers are being pushed in practice and can handle whatever Utah, TCU, FSU and UW throw at them. Love that part.
