QB Battle Day 8

Through one week of practice I think this much is clear: If BYU could start every drive in the blue zone, we'd be pretty unbeatable with either QB. Alas, there will be times when this will happen, but I fear the majority of the time, the offense will have to drive the length of the field and neither QBs has shown much consistency in this regard. So here are the stats for Day 8 and fall camp.

Day 8 Stats:

Heaps: 6-14-0-79, 2 TDs, 137.40 rating, 42.9% complete. 2 TD drives.

Nelson: 4-8-0-39, 1 TD, 132.20 rating, 50% complete, 5 rushes 4 ayrds, 1 TD. 2 TD drives.

Camp Stats:

Heaps: 55-95-2-689, 10 TDs, 149.34 rating, 57.9% complete. 12 TD drives, 1 FG drive

Nelson: 37-63-0-464, 10 TDs, 172.98 rating, 58.7% complete. 12 TD drives, 4 FG drives.

Passing edge goes to Jake and the scoring edge is a push.

If I were naming the starter for a game against Washington tomorrow, I think Riley might trot out first, but both QBs would see significant time.

The longer we go before Bronco names a starter the more I think this is an inevitability. Not the ideal situation, obviously, but it's probably the right thing to do.

I guess I look at it this way. The job was the junior's to lose. He was the guy with a year in the program. He knows the offense, the players, and what the coaches demand. He just had to go out and show it was his job to lose. And then spring camp happened. And then fall camp happened. And the junior has not separated himself from a true freshman. In fact, the freshman looks much better in many ways. Passing, pocket presence and poise being a few. The coaches have also played the freshman against the #1 defense 2x more than the junior. The freshman has done better on full field play, and about equal on blue zone plays. The fact that the stats are so equal only shows how the junior has not gotten it done. With a young team, I think you play the freshman and let the team grow up together. Bodes well for the future.

PS I expect Bronco to name the guy next Monday. He is adding a mid week scrimmage this week to go along with Saturday's scrimmage. I think that gives the starter 1 week of Fall camp to let the guys rally around him, then game week to prep for UW. This will be a HUGE week for the junior and the freshman.

I note several tweets mentioning that too many passes are being dropped by the WRs and TEs. Is this generally the same regardless of which QB is throwing the ball or is there a pattern?

i doubt there is a pattern. its probably just confusing to a degree having two different qbs throwing to you, especially one one is right handed and the other is left handed.

someone said they think bronco will name a starter by next week. i would'n't be suprised about that actually. given that they are both even and continue to be, he should pick one and let him get the lionshare of the reps to prepare him to be ready come gametime. also let the team rally behind him.

i just have to say i am grateful riley is in the program. if jakes does get the nod i know he is not going to cause disruption and problems. he will respect the coaches decision and rally the team appropriately to help them win. form what i have heard that is the type of guy he is. he is no louks.

And given the two QBs, I think the QB whose package requires the most work is Jake's. Riley's package is comprised in part of what Riley does best, which is simply make plays happen. He is less reliant on timing and structure. I wouldn't be surprised if starting next week they start giving Jake a 60-40 share of reps with the first team offense.

Sorry, fixed it. Should have been 4-8. I also forgot the to-date stats. I'll add those when I get back from the eye doctor

You leave yourself open for comments about how well you see things in the QB race...

exactly. Whoever has the biggest package will need the most reps.

Well, they are already giving Jake 2x more reps v. the #1 defense, and I think that stat means something. If you are prepping a guy to start, you play him against your best to see what he can do. And back ups play the back ups more.

that's not really any of our business, and I'm not sure what that has to do with their playing ability

I think for everyone's sake this should be up in the air. The last thing we need, is our two best qb's getting dq'd for honor code violations, because people are comparing package sizes... maybe we should use the words "offensive sets" . :D

I added the to-date camp stats. I also want to point out that Riley has now surpassed Jake in completion percentage, his passer rating is 16% higher than Jake's. He also has more scoring drives. Of course he also has more three-and-outs too.
S

And if you go back to spring ball, Riley has raised his passer rating 12.8% while Jake has only shown a 4.5% increase. Of course, we don't have interceptions available for spring ball numbers.

For those interested, here are the numbers if you combine both spring ball and fall camp:

Heaps: 117-200-2-1463, 17 TDs, 146.00 rating, 58.5% complete.

Nelson: 66-114-0-853, 15 TDs, 164.17 rating, 57.9% complete.

The current QB trend is also one of inaccuracy. Both QBs only have one reported practice session above 60% in the last five sessions.

Seemed to me that there are a fair number of passes dropped in drills and scrimmage that are thrown too hard by heaps. Needs a little more touch and the percentage goes up.

At the scrimmage (this past Sat.) I saw a number of passes ricochet off receivers pads or through their hands. I didn't know who the players were - I didn't have one of the few team rosters that were handed out. A number of catchable balls - thrown by both Jake & Riley were dropped. The passes were so "right there" - it made the stands groan.
