Question about the UofU

So the other day I went to the demolition derby at the Salt Lake County Fair with my wife. She's from up there and its a family tradition.



Salt Lake County + $8 beer + rednecks cheering as cars smash into each other in reverse = Ute shirts all around!



Anyways, every once in a while when these yewts would stand up and cheer their mullet hair would swing out of the way and reveal the logo on the back of their pUke shirt. It's a hawk. I saw it on multiple shirts and hats.



I'd never seen this logo before, is this a new logo for the U? Are they phasing out the ute drum and feather logo? Are they going to be the UofU Hawks someday? Perhaps my friend MTM can shed some light on this for me.

Actually, I have heard something about becoming PC and not using Ute anymore. I don't know for sure but I think it may have something to do with the other PAC12 members.



Makes little difference to me personally but I was always under the impression that the university had the Ute tribe's blessing to use the nickname in a respectful manner which I think they've done since they got rid of the white guy in warpaint riding out on a horse and chucking a flaming spear at a bail of hay to start the game.

You should just become a Cougar fan before its too late! Sounds like its already too late for some, but ya can still save yourself!

The Utes are finally winning. I grew up during LaVell. It would've been easier to switch then! I can't now

I tried to find something more on this and cannot.



The PAC12 thing was something that was floated on Utefans.net.



I don't know if there is anything to it.

They've had the hawk mascot for several years now but I was hearing they might do away the nickname "Ute" altogether and become the Utah Whatever...Red Tail Hawks, etc.

This is a very disturbing trend for me personally as the Utes try to abandon their history. Clearly they went to the BYU Boards to see what they could do to become more popular and they noticed my name, clearly they thought to bank on my likable personality by copying my handle. Maybe Lawboy can tell me if I have a case to sue or not?

AARGGH! I hate this crap. "Culturally offensive" is the stupidest idea that the masses have ever decided to respect. Why is it that people can lambast American culture without any repurcussions, and yet when someone unintentionally pokes fun at your imaginary lizard grandpa and suddenly it's in the newspaper? Of course a world where everyone is respectful toward each other people is the ideal. But this type of oversensitivity is ridiculous.

We're starting to see the downward spiral of sports mascots. Here is a list of current mascots that won't be around much longer.



Notre Dame Fighting Irish: Offensive to the peaceful Irish. New name will be the Notre Dame Shamrocks or Non-Violent Irish.



Washington Redskins: Obviously offensive. They will keep the name but with an asterisk- Washington Redskins* (*Sunburned White People)



Wyoming and Dallas Cowboys: Offensive to cowgirls. New name will be Wyoming/Dallas Cowpeople.



Anaheim Angels: Offensive to Atheists. New name will be the Anaheim Homosexuals. Nobody is allowed to be offended by that in California.

Oakland Athletics: Offensive to unathletic people. New name is Oakland Americans. Offensive to illegal immigrants. New name is just Oakland A's. Offensive to the rest of the alphabet. New name is Oakland Aardvarks.



San Francisco 49ers: Offensive to people to went to California in every year but 1849. New name will be the San Francisco Californians



San Francisco Giants: Offensive to short people and really tall people. New name will be the San Francisco People.



New England Patriots: Amid the spying scandal with Belichick they are no longer worthy to call themselves Patriots. What would George Washington say to the idea of spying on the British to gain an advantage...err...bad example.



Yes pretty soon every team will have to have an animal mascot. Except whales. You can't touch them, people are really touchy about the whales for some reason.

Even the animals aren't safe anymore. I heard the Miami Dolphins are changing their name to the "Miami Dolphin-Safe-Tuna".

so i ventured over to utefans.net to see what is like. first off its the most ridiculous website i have ever seen. second every thread had to do with "zoobs." even in the pac12 they still can't stop talking about us. ute fans are so annoying with their little brother syndrome. they have had a fwe great years and our now is a major conference. they should get over this by now and just move on.

I don't think they're trying to "abandon their history" as much as trying to deal with reality.



The world is rapidly becoming a place where mascots like Utes, Redskins, etc are simply not going to be accepted. They're smart to begin the phaseout of "Ute" now, as it is an inevitability. Combining an official name-change with the move into the Pac-12 would be a very smart business move imo.
