Sark Comments

Some interesting comments today regarding BYU by former Cougar quarterback Steve Sarkisian, who will be in Provo as Washington's coach when the Cougars take on the Huskies on Sept. 4. All of Sark's comments about BYU can be found in Seattle Times writer Bob Condotta's fine blog here, but here are some excerpts:



"I don't remember the BYU fight song, to be honest with you. That was a long time ago. I don't know.'' So instead of playing the BYU fight song during practices leading up to the game, he said "I'll probably play some 'Star Wars' and different things that they like to play in the stadium. I've got a few of the songs I know they like to play."

* Asked the last time he had been on campus, he said: "Probably my last day there. I haven't been back on campus - haven't been in the football office or to a game or anything. When I recently had gotten done playing, I went to Vegas and watched them play in a WAC championship game. That was the only time I've seen them play, and I haven't been back there - haven't had a chance to and/or a reason to.''

* He has joked that he will only go out to the field at halftime for the QB renunion planned for that day if UW is ahead. Told he might be booed, he said: "They've booed me before in that stadium. I'm not that concerned about it."



Those are some douche bag comments if you ask me. Really ungrateful. How can you not remember the fight song? How can you not follow your Alma Mater, crap we follow them religiously and we didn't even play. Joking or not, I hope the jerk doesn't come out for half-time and we are ahead by 50 points.

Meh, I think you're blowing it a little out of proportion. Shoot, I don't know my high school fight song and I've been to maybe three games since I graduated.



He probably moved out of state since graduating and hasn't had a reason to go back to Utah. I don't see a problem with that considering he's been working and carrying on with life.

I would bet that those comments were in response to criticism that he may have received for returning to BYU and being honored at halftime. I'm sure that he wants it to look like he has severed all emotional ties to his alma mater and that he is fully invested in Husky football.



It's kind of like you telling your wife that your ex-girlfriend is ugly and mean, it just makes everyone involved feel better. :)

How would it have looked to Washington if Sark was like! oh sure! I remember. RISE AND SHOUT THE COUGARS ARE OUT!...



it would be even worse if he made some kind of coaching mistake that cost them the win against the Cougars and this gets brought up as proof that he lost on purpose.



I'm sure he's very grateful for his time here, but he's got another crowd to appease at the moment.

Uh, the VAST majority of players aren't nearly the fans of their alma mater as are that team's die hard fans. For every John Beck (HUGE fan) there are at least 10 guys that don't really care at all. Sark is one of those apparently.



Basically, if you care enough to frequent a message board, you are likely more of a fan than the average former player.

If it weren't for BYU and Lavell Sark would be bagging groceries at Macy's. ha/ha I know it seems like I'm over reacting but come on, dude all of the sudden doesn't remember anything about BYU except for popcorn popping on the apricot tree and the star wars song? Just odd comments to me.



An I remember my highschool fight song, I put it on repeat on my ipod evernight before I go to bed. He'll probably have an opportunity to hear the fight song a 5 or 6 times when he comes to Provo.

Sark has acted a bit like a jerk a few times, and the cheating isn't cool; but he's still a good kid.

Were all of you people that are now upset with Sark upset with Bronco before the Las Vegas Bowl against Oregon State? It was not exactly a compliment when he said the only reason he played there was because they had BYU on the schedule. Sarkisian is saying all the right things for the fans that ultimately pay his salary. Plus, I am not at all offended if all along Sarkisian viewed BYU as a stepping stone to his next gig. It does not take away the Cotton Bowl victory.

I think Sark's comments are pretty douche-baggerish.



Seems like he's trying harder to convince himself that he's left BYU behind than he is trying to convince everyone else. Here's to play number one of the game being a touchdown bomb from Heaps to Jacobsen...

Excellent point. I don't know how you can expect him to wax nostalgic about BYU and Provo. Even if he does remember the fight song (which he probably does) he's not going to project any kind of fondness for BYU now that he is coaching somewhere else.



Just like Bronco and Oregon State, Kyle and BYU ( ;) ) . When your paycheck is coming from a different school your allegiances have to change, don't they? At least for that week.

Let's be honest here. What reason would any non-lds person have to want to come to Utah? I don't blame him a bit. Sark has always been a classy guy in my book. He's been at USC and is now head coach of UW - nostalgia for BYU is probably the last thing on his mind.

I'm trying to figure out what game he got booed at. It certainly wasn't any game in 1996. So it had to have been a game in 1995. BYU was 4-2 at home that year. We lost to Utah 34-17 that year. Sark threw four INTs that game and I think three of them were in the first half.



I think I probably booed him, just like I'd boo any player who had such a poor first half.

Sark says he hasn't been back since he left campus on the last day of classes. Was he not with USC when they came to Provo with Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart in about 2004??? I can't remember the year for sure but I thought he was the QB coach for USC at that time...

According to Wikipedia he had a one year stint as the Raiders QB coach in 2004.
